Spring Semester Check-In with the Senior Interns

Last week, I got to take a break from reviewing applications to catch up with the Admission Senior Interns. We ordered delivery from The Spot, a cafe just down Foothill Blvd., and talked about our spring semesters and our plans for spring break, which started yesterday. Read on to learn about what the interns have been up to!

Carla Becker

Carla Becker, HMC 2018

Hometown: Huntsville, AL
High school: Randolph School
Major: Physics and Chemistry double major
Spot Order: Pitaya bowl with Nutella
What she’s been up to: Attending the American Physical Society March Meeting and getting an early start to break with a graduate school visit at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Spring break plans: Camping in Joshua Tree and possibly buying her first car!

Grant Murray

What he’s been up to: Enjoying the snow at Mt. Baldy and working on thesis a lot, but mostly taking some much-needed rest after the end of swim season.
Spring break plans: Mexico trip with Claremont College Consortium students

Hamza Khan

Major: Engineering

What he’s been up to: testing the printed circuit board (PCB) that just arrived for his Clinic project (sponsored by Wet Design) and hoping it will work.
Spring break plans: Hanging out in the LA arts district (hopefully with Prof. Fandell, or “Ken”), camping in Joshua Tree, skiing in Mammoth, and starting a project funded by one of the student research grants provided by the college, the Shanahan Fund (Hamza and a friend will be creating a sensor system to monitor ambient temperature, humidity, and light for artwork, “kind of like an IoT (Internet of Things) device for art”).

Jane Wu

Major: Computer Science and Math double major

What she’s been up to: Taking photographs in the style of Group f/46 for her History of Landscape Photography class, starting final projects (Jane disclosed that she intentionally signed up for classes that had final projects instead of exams this semester, and that she is most looking forward to working on the project for HMC CS 158: Machine Learning).
Spring break plans: Visiting a couple of graduate schools in the Bay Area, hanging out with friends on campus, and giving tours.

Jasmin Rizko

Major: Mathematical and Computational Biology

What she’s been up to: Visiting Helix in San Carlos for her Clinic project and taking the midterm for her favorite class, genomics at the Keck Science Center.
Spring break plans: Going on a National Parks tour of California (Death Valley, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Pinnacles) and arriving back on campus in time for a San Diego Biotech tour organized by Mudd’s Office of Career Services.

Moira Dillon

What she’s been up to: Taking care of various fermented things (sauerkraut, kombucha, and the like) for Professor Spackman’s Microbial Geographies course and planning her final project on honeybee behavior for her Ecology lab course with Professor Matasci-Donaldson (class size: 1).
Spring break plans: Visiting Mexico and skiing at Mammoth.

Patrick Scalise

What he’s been up to: Writing a paper for Professor De Laet’s anthropology class exploring how the engineering curriculum at Harvey Mudd teaches students to think about engineering.
Spring break plans: Taking a trip to Baja California, and then visiting graduate schools in Boston.

Ramita Kondepudi

What she’s been up to: Building a testing rig to analyze blood for her Clinic project, and working on an independent study literature course on American immigrant identities with Professor Balseiro (Ramita is currently interviewing 1st and 2nd generation immigrants to collect primary evidence for a final paper).
Spring break plans: Visiting Chicago and New York with friends
