Meet Karl Haushalter

Karl Haushalter, Vice President for Academic Affairs and R. Michael Shanahan Dean of the Faculty, has been a member of the Harvey Mudd faculty since 2003. A distinguished scholar and educator in chemistry and biology, he brings over two decades of teaching and leadership experience as well as a steadfast commitment to academic excellence and innovation. Haushalter has served in many leadership roles, including chair of the Department of Chemistry, associate dean of research and experiential learning, and co-chair of the Task Force on Clinic and Corporate Partnerships. His research focuses on the biochemistry of DNA and RNA interactions, as well as the societal implications of science. Haushalter also serves as an ambassador for Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER), the flagship program of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement.

About the Dean’s Office

The Office of the Dean of the Faculty (DOF) oversees the academic program, supports the faculty in their teaching and research, administers existing academic programs and explores new teaching and learning initiatives. We share in the College’s mission to provide a top-notch science and engineering education within a liberal arts context, so that our graduates are uniquely prepared to lead in their fields and understand their impact on society.
