Research: Stoebel Lab

Areas of study: Biology

Class year: Sophomore

Major: Joint major in Biology and Chemistry

In the spring of her frosh year, Bella started working in Professor Stoebel’s lab. As a part of the biology department, the lab focuses on RpoS, the E.coli global transcriptional regulator. The research involves a lot of molecular biology; read more information about this lab.

Bella’s thoughts: “Research has been a really good experience, and I have learned a lot. Since Mudd is only for undergrads, Professor Stoebel really invests his time in making sure we understand the techniques used in lab. He also values our input. I think it is really cool that research is available for frosh, which is not common at most schools, and it’s special to be able to connect with professors and get to know them as people.”

Research: VA3DR: Visual Autonomy through 3D Rendering

Areas of study: Computer Science, Robotics

Class year: Junior

Major: Engineering

Last summer, David joined Professor Dodds’ research team, which worked towards developing a system to help a robot identify where it is with respect to its environment. This research involved using color and geometry algorithms to achieve autonomous, vision-based robotic movement. After a successful summer, the team presented its results at a conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, in December. They also wrote a paper that got published in the conference proceedings.

David’s thoughts: “[The research was] really good. One of my favorite [nonacademic] parts was going to Costco on a snack run every week with a $200 gift card. And the conference was cool!”
