Looking Forward

Hello world! In the dead of California “winter” (mid-sixties and sunny- real jacket weather) students at Harvey Mudd are already thinking about the distant wonderland that is summer. Mudders aren’t just daydreaming about beaches and Star Trek Beyond (coming out in July!), they’re seeking out opportunities to further their academic and professional careers. For many Mudders this means research, but for others this could mean internships, teaching, working at start-ups, or a myriad of other things.

I myself recently applied for computer science research at Mudd. There are a plethora of fascinating projects taking place on campus this summer, ranging from creating intelligent music software (coding jazz improvisation), to autonomizing RC vehicles (programming drones). Every department has research available to students, and better yet, every student has a good shot at on campus research. Because Harvey Mudd is a completely undergraduate institution, there are no grad students to compete with for limited spots on research teams.

Mudders are also seeking to test the waters of the professional world. Many students aim to land internships in their respective fields, possibly as preparation for life post-graduation. But even first year Mudders commonly seek out professional practice opportunities at places like Google, Yelp, Facebook, Honeywell, and others, many of which will be represented at Mudd’s very own career fair this coming Friday.
