Club Events
March 2, 2015Harvey Mudd has a lot of clubs. These range from official organizations like the Society for Women Engineers (SWE) to hobby gatherings like the Cheese Club. Most clubs have regular meetings for discussions, event planning, and/or consumption of cheesy foods. Every club is different, so it’s fun to go to a lot of different club meetings and see what happens!
Some clubs hold various events in addition to meetings. For example, the Combat Robotics Club builds a robot at their meetings and in their free time and attends a competition late in the year. The Science Bus club regularly travels to local elementary schools and teaches science lessons to students. In a few weeks, they will host a Science Day event on campus, which involves bringing elementary students to Mudd and filling the day with fun, interactive experiments.
Several of my clubs hosted events this weekend. The PRISM (People Respecting Individuals’ Sexualities at Mudd) club put on a “Gender-Bread” decorating party. Members decorated gingerbread people and other cookies to reflect their own sexual identities and/or express support for others. Another big event that PRISM facilitates is the Day of Silence, where participants don’t talk for a day to represent the oppression of LGBTQ groups. At the end of the day, the club hosts the Breaking the Silence Barbecue on the quad, complete with rainbow cake.
The other club event that I attended this weekend was a dinner for W-ACM (Women in the Association of Computing Machinery). Various professors host club members for dinner at their houses. I went to a dinner at CS Professor Colleen Lewis’ house with seven other students for a fun night off campus. We were treated to a homemade Italian meal, which was a welcome break from eating at the dining hall all the time! Prof Lewis even made a bunch of different colors of cookie dough and let us loose with decorations. It was a great end to a weekend filled with club events, cookies, and friends.
