Federal Government Shutdown – October 2025
October 10, 2025The federal government has shutdown effective October 1 due to a lapse in funding. As a result, federal agencies have limited operations for essential functions and employees have been furloughed for the closure. Rest assured that many of the functions of the Department of Education (ED) remain operational, and at this time there is no immediate impact to federal financial aid processes.
- The 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 FAFSA® forms are still available. Students and their contributors can continue to start, fill out, and submit a FAFSA form at fafsa.gov. FAFSA applications will be processed and sent to schools as usual.
- The FAFSA customer service contact center remains open. Students and contributors can receive assistance by contacting 1-800-4-FED-AID during the closure.
- The Federal Direct Student Loan and Federal Pell Grant programs are operational during the shutdown. Students and parent borrowers may apply for, complete loan requirements and receive funding during the shutdown.
- Federal Direct Student Loan servicers core operations are continuing during the closure, including contact center operations, billing, and payment processing. Borrowers should continue to make regular payments on their federal student loan and parent loans during the shutdown.
