Socially Distanced Performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Claremont Concert Orchestra

In the remote setting of COVID, orchestra director David Cubek—who holds a joint faculty appointment in Harvey Mudd’s Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts and at Scripps College—continues to engage students in a rich experience with the arts. The Claremont Concert Orchestra is one of three student ensembles in the Joint Music Program of Harvey Mudd, Claremont McKenna, Pitzer and Scripps colleges.

During the 2020 fall semester, Cubek led a virtual curriculum featuring in-depth score readings of Beethoven’s symphonies and Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” His students also explored composers from underrepresented communities and hosted weekly sectionals for the various instruments. The semester concluded in a remote performance of the “Ode to Joy” excerpt from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. We hope you enjoy it!
