Mathematics Faculty: Michael Orrison
Michael Orrison, PhD, enjoys finding, exploring and describing novel applications of the representation theory of finite groups. For example, by using ideas from the representation theory of symmetric groups, he and his colleagues have been able to offer alternative explanations and extensions to various foundational ideas in voting theory and statistics.
Orrison is one of the North American co-directors for the Aquincum Institute of Technology (AIT) study abroad program in Budapest, Hungary. Designed for computer science, software engineering and computational biology majors, the program emphasizes theory and applications together with entrepreneurship and design.
Orrison is also active in K-12 outreach. He co-founded Pathways, which is a Los Angeles area mathematics outreach program based in the Department of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College. Presenters for the popular program are all professional mathematicians who are eager to share their love of mathematics with elementary, junior high and high school students.
