DUNS stands for Data Universal Numbering System. The DUNS number is a unique code assigned to organizations by the business information firm Dun & Bradstreet. The federal government typically requires entities with which it does business to have a DUNS number.
System for Award Management (SAM) Unique Entity ID will replace the DUNS number as the primary means of entity identification for Federal awards government-wide. This number will be required for proposals submitted in research.gov and FastLane beginning April 4, 2022.
Employer Identification Number
The Employer Identification Number (EIN)—also known as the Federal Tax Identification Number—is a nine-digit code assigned by the Internal Revenue Service. It identifies corporations and organizations, including non-profits, who must file tax returns. For example, the EIN is used by the National Science Foundation and is provided automatically to proposals submitted via FastLane.
