Emma Beer

Emma Beer, PhD, Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics, earned her Bachelors in Mathematics from the University of Oxford and her PhD in Physical Oceanography from the University of California, San Diego. Beer’s PhD thesis focused on using idealized models of Earth Systems to investigate possible feedbacks taking place in the Arctic under climate change. Before coming to Harvey Mudd, she was a Lecturer in the Earth, Environmental and Planetary Department at Rice University.

In her research and undergraduate mentorship, Beer has used mathematical and computational tools to explore Earth science phenomena. She particular enjoys teaching mathematics in introductory courses that are a foundation for a diverse array of careers and further study. Her teaching philosophy is to make learning accessible and engaging while building the tools and knowledge needed for students to advance and becoming independent learners.
