CS Grutoring
About
Grutors are students who support their peers by grading and tutoring, hence grutoring! Grutors work with professors to help students learn the material, and grutors are integral to the collaborative and supportive learning culture we encourage in the Computer Science Department at Harvey Mudd College.
Grutoring is a paid position, and the department puts out a call for grutors each semester. Typically the call comes out during the week after registration for the next semester.
Our grutors work within the Grutor Community Center (GCC) hours that are largely maintained and led by students. At the GCC, students can find a space to work on homework, connect with others, and learn more about the computer science student experience.

Note: First-year students cannot grutor immediately following their first CS Class.
Fall 2026 Updates
This upcoming Fall we’re looking for applicants who are generally available during Monday through Thursdays from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM for tutoring sessions. Special sessions for tutoring may be assigned as needed by class session.
Onboarding Steps for New Hires (I-9 Documentation)
If you are given an offer to grutor with the CS Department, a major obstacle most new hires face is providing identification documents (I-9 form). It is extremely important that over your Summer/Winter break that you bring these documents back with you to campus.
Please note that:
- Documents must be original. Photocopies are not acceptable.
- Original documents must be shown in person to HR, in addition to being uploaded on Workday.
- International students must obtain a social security card. If you are offered a job, the acceptance form will provide further instructions for you.
Acceptable I-9 Documents can be found here.
There will be other tasks to complete during onboarding through Workday. Students may NOT work until they have been fully onboarded and hired through HR.
The HR Department has a page for student employment. The student employment page includes information for onboarding processes, a payroll calendar, and tutorials for various Workday processes.
Grutor Workday Time Card
Please view this document for instructions on submitting time and Retro Pay. This document is tailored for Grutors, but HR also sends out official tutorials in their biweekly reminders to submit time cards.
