Outside and Private Awards

In addition to federal, state, and HMC funding, there are plenty of other awards sponsored by corporations, civic organizations, and other groups, which are designed to help talented students get the funding they need. As you search for awards, keep in mind how outside scholarships will affect your overall financial aid package.

One of the first free online search services with a database of more than 400,000 scholarships.

The College Board Scholarship Search
A searchable database of scholarships, loans, internships, and other financial aid programs from 2,300 sources.

FastAid
A database of awards for undergraduate through postgraduate studies.

FinAid Unusual Scholarships
Lists some of the more interesting, esoteric, and unusual scholarships FinAid.org has encountered.

ROTC Scholarships
Through ROTC, you can earn a commission in the military while obtaining a degree from HMC. Scholarships are also available for students in some programs. ROTC programs offered at HMC include:

U.S. Air Force ROTC (AFROTC): Through an agreement with the University of Southern California, students may participate in AFROTC while enrolled at HMCHMC has been designated as the host college for The Claremont Colleges and neighboring institutions. Further information may be obtained by writing to the Department of Aerospace Studies/AFROTC, Harvey Mudd College, 301 Platt Boulevard, Claremont, CA 91711.

U.S. Army ROTC: HMC offers two- and four-year programs through The Claremont Colleges Army ROTC Unit. Request information from the Department of Military Science and Leadership, Claremont McKenna College, 500 E. Internships and Fellowships for Graduates 

There are also internships and fellowships for your consideration. Below is a list of some internships and fellowships:

Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship
Deadline: November
Awards: Stipend of $20,000 and institutional allowance of $2,000 for three years for Predoctoral; stipend of $21,000 for one year for Dissertation; stipend of $40,000 for one year and $1,500 employing institution allowance to be matched by employing institution for Postdoctoral.
Who Can Apply: All citizens or nationals of the United States regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation; individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other designations); individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level.

Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) Fellowship
Deadline: December 31
Awards: Up to $12,000
Who Can Apply: For students who are exploring the principles, practices, and institutions necessary to a free society through their academic work.

The Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship
Deadline: January 22
Awards: Cover actual tuition costs plus an $18,000 annual stipend to be allocated towards room, board, living expenses, and income taxes.
Who Can Apply: Available to students pursuing or intending to pursue a graduate degree at a designated institution of higher learning located in the United States of America. The program of study being pursued by the candidate may include any recognized field of study in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences. The candidate must have received a baccalaureate degree at the time the fellowship would commence, demonstrate a need for financial assistance, be enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing graduate studies in the U.S., be a citizen of the U.S., and may be of any national descent or background.

Journalism Internships
Deadline: Apply for a spring placement by November 15 and for a summer placement by January 31
Sharpen your writing skills and work with experienced journalists. The IHS Journalism Internship Program offers paid internships in print, broadcast, and investigative journalism. Placements are available at newspapers, media networks, and state-policy organizations and take place during the fall, spring, and summer. The program includes a week long career workshop and mentoring.

Production Internships
Deadline: Placements are available during the fall, spring and summer. Apply for a spring placement by November 15 and for a summer placement by February 15.
Discover the best production techniques. The IHS Production Internship Program offers paid internships at production companies making films, documentaries, online video programs, and more. The program includes a week long IHS workshop featuring talks by filmmakers and policy analysts. Applicants at all levels of experience are encouraged to apply.

Public Policy Internships
Deadline: Apply by January 31
Learn about and influence public policy. The Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program combines a paid public policy internship at a think tank or nonprofit with two week long career skills seminars and weekly policy lectures. Internships are available at more than 70 think tanks and nonprofits involved with state or federal policy located across the United States.
