Shion Andrew (’21) has been awarded a 2021–2022 Churchill Scholarship. She is the latest of Harvey Mudd College’s 16 Churchill Scholarship winners, dating back to 1973—more than any non-PhD-grating institution. Shion is one of 16 awardees this year in the United States.

“The Churchill Scholarship provides funding to American students for a year of Master’s study at the University of Cambridge, based at Churchill College. The program was set up at the request of Sir Winston Churchill in order to fulfil his vision of US–UK scientific exchange with the goal of advancing science and technology on both sides of the Atlantic, helping to ensure our future prosperity and security.”

Shion plans to perform astrophysical research at Cambridge University that is at the intersection of observation and theory, attempting to answer fundamental questions about the evolution of the universe through mathematical modeling and computer science. She is interested in the versatility of the information extracted from large datasets and plans to explore this research interest further by collaborating with astrophysicists who explore the parameter space of these surveys.
