Julia Freer ’88

I recently rebranded my 11-year-old business as Material Value Consulting. My mission is to ensure that companies prioritizing human and environmental health don’t just survive — they lead. I believe in a business landscape where responsible manufacturing is recognized, rewarded, and sets the standard for what’s possible.

The latest book in the Empowering Women in STEM Series from CRC Press (release date 6/16/25) includes a chapter where I tell my story, including discovering the field of materials science my junior year at Mudd. I quote the HMC mission statement and a sentence from my senior yearbook page.

There will be more books in the series. If you identify as a woman and want to contribute a chapter, please reach out, and I’ll connect you with the editor.

On a personal note, I am happy to be reclaiming my original name Julia Freer following my divorce. (Life event announcements are “supposed” to mention things like marriages and births, but they don’t have to.)
