TJ Tsai

TJ Tsai, PhD studies the intersection of music, signal processing, and machine learning. As director of the Music Information Retrieval (MIR) Lab at Harvey Mudd, he mentors students in projects that combine their musical expertise with technical research, from analyzing complex audio data to developing systems that support new modes of musical performance. Tsai has created a two-part elective sequence in digital signal processing and machine learning that reflects his commitment to blending theory with hands-on applications. He received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2022 for his work on ordered alignment methods for complex, high-dimensional data, enabling international collaborations with researchers in Germany.

Tsai earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University, his PhD in electrical engineering and computer sciences from UC Berkeley, and he joined the Harvey Mudd faculty in 2016.
