Assistant Professor of Artificial Intelligence

Harvey Mudd College seeks to educate engineers, scientists and mathematicians well versed in all of these areas and in the humanities, social sciences and the arts so that they may assume leadership in their fields with a clear understanding of the impact of their work on society.

The Computer Science Department at Harvey Mudd College (HMC) is pleased to announce an opening for an assistant professor of artificial intelligence commencing July 1, 2026. Exceptional candidates at higher ranks are welcome to apply. Successful candidates should have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the time of appointment. The 9-month salary range for this position is $110k – 125k.

The candidate will be expected to provide students with vibrant AI research experiences and develop innovative AI curricula and programming that support AI education across all departments at HMC and beyond.  In addition to offering courses at the forefront of AI technological advances, such as Generative AI or Deep Learning, the candidate will be expected to have a clear vision for how their research and teaching address the ethics and social impacts of AI.  For example, in developing a curriculum, the candidate could create a course for all HMC students that teaches the theoretical foundations and the responsible use of AI across the STEM disciplines. They could also develop electives for specific HMC STEM majors, such as “AI for Engineering” and “AI for Scientific Discovery.”

Harvey Mudd College is a highly selective liberal arts college of science, engineering, and mathematics. It is located in Claremont, CA, approximately 35 miles east of Los Angeles, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. The college enrolls approximately 950 students, nearly all of whom live on campus. It is a member of the Claremont Colleges, which comprises five undergraduate colleges, Claremont Graduate University, and the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences.

The Computer Science Department currently has eighteen tenure-track faculty members. It serves five major programs—the computer science major, the joint major in computer science and mathematics, the joint major in computer science and physics, the joint major in climate and computer science, and the joint major in mathematical and computational biology—totaling around 120 students in each graduating class.

One of the department’s many strengths is its success in recruiting women, who make up about half of our faculty and students, to computer science. Harvey Mudd College is committed to broadening participation in STEM fields. Among the criteria for appointment are demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and mentoring a broad range of students, including those from historically underserved backgrounds.

Our innovative and rigorous curriculum prepares students for both employment and graduate school and includes an active research program involving a substantial number of undergraduates. The teaching load is two courses per semester, plus supervision of one or two industry-supported senior capstone Computer Science Clinic projects per year. Please visit https://www.hmc.edu/cs/ for more information about the department and the Clinic program. The department seeks candidates excited to contribute to the CS clinic program and the college-wide Core Curriculum. In addition to disciplinary courses, the core curriculum includes a first-year course in academic writing and a course centered on the relationship between science and society, both taught by faculty from all departments at the college.
