Clinic Success Stories
Clinic project sponsors publicize successful projects through press releases, internal and external publications and other sources. The following provides a sampling of Clinic success stories as well as general information published about the Clinic Program. For additional information, click on the link(s) by each story.
January 15, 2021 – Glenn Hudson ‘07 landed at Fluidmaster a few years after graduating from Harvey Mudd College, in part because he knew the company from the first Clinic project they sponsored back in 2005. Fluidmaster’s original Clinic project was a great success, and they decided to hire Joe Laubach ’05, who had been the team leader during one of the semesters.
January 15, 2021 – Pure Storage delivers a modern data experience that empowers organizations to run their operations as a true, automated, storage-as-a-service model seamlessly across multiple clouds. Through a virtual volume provisioning service in the cloud called Pure Cloud Block Store (CBS), Pure provides enterprise features such as high durability and availability that go beyond the standard cloud services that AWS provides.
December 16, 2020 – As part of its Clinic Program, Harvey Mudd College commits to at least two social justice projects every year. During the 2020–2021 academic year, the Department of Mathematics partnered with the Community Environmental Health Action Team (CEHAT) to provide data analysis and education about air quality and the impact on the health of residents in South Gate, a city 12 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
December 16, 2020 – Working remotely added some complications for an Alfred E. Mann Foundation (AMF) Engineering Clinic team data collection for a sleep study, which will collect data using external sensors from volunteers over two to three nights. The goal of the project is to develop more effective treatments for sleep apnea.
October 21, 2020 – Clinic students from Harvey Mudd College successfully designed and trained the Syntiant® NDP101™ Neural Decision Processor™ (NDP) to detect and classify hand motions for a wearable device.
September 22, 2020 – Having overcome pandemic challenges, members of the 2019–2020 Harvey Mudd College Sandia National Laboratories Clinic team are celebrating publication of their research by Cambridge University Press. The Sandia Clinic project, one of 56 Clinic projects sponsored last academic year, concerns barium titanate (BTO), a ferroelectric material used in capacitors because of its high dielectric constant, which may be even higher in nanoparticle form.
July 29, 2019 – The 2018–2019 Clinic Program included three projects (two engineering and one mathematics) that allowed a team of Clinic students to work on a project related to social justice. Funded in part by an educational leadership grant that President Maria Klawe received from the Carnegie Corporation, the three projects supported non-profit organizations with technical expertise.
February 21, 2017 – During the 2016 Manufacturers’ Council of the Inland Empire award ceremony celebrating the most innovative businesses and leaders in the Inland Empire, participants of Harvey Mudd College’s 2015–2016 Engineering Clinic Program received an E=mc² Innovation Award for their ingenuity in solving a changeover problem for Niagara Bottling, LLC.
MIT Lincoln Laboratory, June 1, 2016 – Students from Harvey Mudd College (HMC) visited Lincoln Laboratory on 4 May to present their conclusions from a yearlong clinic. The clinic program at HMC offers students the chance to pursue a project proposed and funded by industry sponsors. Working with staff from Advanced Concepts and Technologies, Group 39, the group of five students set out to create a way to model and test synchronization of wireless systems, which require aligning the time of digital clocks down to the nanosecond level.
Harvey Mudd College Magazine, Fall/Winter 2015: With a little help from Mudders, New Horizons has begun to unlock the mysteries of the farthest worlds ever explored by humankind.
The MITRE Corporation, January 10, 2016 – Taking on MITRE’s challenge, Harvey Mudd College students deliver a formula for separating usable fingerprints from the smudges and smears. The process makes it easier for analysts to link prints to people.
Smithsonian Online, February 12, 2014 – A new technology developed for the military has the potential to save soldiers from fatal gunshot wounds. Harvey Mudd College students who worked with RevMedX to fabricate a spongy material that’s coated with an antimicrobial clotting agent called chitosan.
