Harvey Mudd College Awarded Mental Health and Wellbeing Award
September 3, 2025
Harvey Mudd College has been awarded the 2025 Mental Health and Well-Being Award by Insight Into Academia magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The award recognizes colleges and universities that demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering a culture of mental wellness and wellbeing within their campus communities. Harvey Mudd is featured, along with 70 other recipients, in the September 2025 issue of the magazine.
Assistant Dean of Wellbeing Dominique White says the award highlights the creative and community-centered ways the College supports mental health on campus. “Mental health and wellbeing are deeply woven into campus life,” White says, referring to the College’s innovative programs, accessible mental health resources and initiatives that support students’ emotional resilience, stress management and overall psychological wellbeing.
Among the programs and initiatives that were recognized for advancing the core values of inclusive excellence and belonging at Harvey Mudd are
- The Office of Institutional Diversity’s peer mentor groups which support students during their transition to college and throughout their first-year
- Required mental health first aid training of all HMC student mentors and proctors implemented by the Office of Housing and Residential Life
- The Mudd Fam Meals program, which fosters connection and belonging by offering a space for students remaining on campus during spring break to share a meal with faculty and staff.
College employees are supported through the Office of Human Resources, which provides LinkedIn Learning for professional development, a premium subscription to the Calm app for mental wellness and 24/7 access to the Optum Employee Assistance Program, which offers free personal assessments and counseling for employees and their household members.
“These efforts reflect the belief that small, consistent moments of care can have a lasting impact on our community’s mental health,” White says. “By sharing our work, we hope to inspire other institutions to think beyond traditional models and recognize the value of everyday moments that nurture wellbeing. This recognition affirms the dedication of our students and staff who work collaboratively to create a compassionate, supportive campus culture.”
