The Division of Student Affairs (DSA) at Harvey Mudd College is committed to offering support to all students as they engage in the rigorous, fast-paced curriculum. We provide co-curricular programs, training, and services to encourage student development in personal, social, and academic domains as they engage transitioning from high school to college. To that end, we partner with faculty, staff and students to create a climate of inclusion and diversity, where differentially-abled students are included as integral contributors to our intellectual community.

Our objectives in providing ability-related services are to:

  • ensure the effective delivery of reasonable accommodations;
  • promote access through outreach and training for faculty, staff and students;
  • support differentially-abled students with developing self-advocacy and
  • partnering with faculty in creating inclusive learning environments based on the principles of Universal Design

American with Disabilities Act (ADA)

The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 as amended and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 provide that individuals with disabilities are protected from discrimination and may be entitled to reasonable accommodation. This includes individuals with learning, physical, sensory, psychological, medical and temporary disabilities. Harvey Mudd College is committed to providing equal learning and working opportunities for students with disabilities. With the collaboration and support of the entire campus community, the Office of the Dean of Students facilitates full access to courses, facilities, programs, and services through reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, consultation, and technical assistance.

  • reduced distraction testing environment
  • note takers
  • printed material in alternate format
  • recording during lectures
  • housing safety and emergency technologies
  • easier access to facilities and program

Process for New requests for Accommodations

The process for receiving accommodations include the following steps:

  1. Email the Office of Disability Resources ( with your request for accommodations. Make sure you attach any formal medical/psychological documentation to the email. Alternatively, you can mail the documentation or deliver it to the Office of Disability Resources at HMC. All requests must be accompanied by documentation. The documentation will be reviewed by the Office of Disability Resources, and as needed, the 5C student Disability Resource Center and Student Health and Counseling Services.
  2. A professional staff member from the Office of Disability Resources will meet with the students to review their request and support their needs.  The student will then be notified of the outcome of the review during the meeting or shortly after.

Process for continuing requests for accommodations

  1. Students with documentation on file will be emailed at the beginning of the academic year to coordinate ongoing or new services and support. Medical/psychological documentation (if not already on file) will be required for any services requested.
  2. A professional staff member from the Office of Disability Resources will meet with the students to review their request and support their needs.  The student will then be notified of the outcome of the review during the meeting or shortly after.

Notifications and Confidentiality

For accommodations that impact the classroom environment or teaching procedures, only the faculty members who are teaching these classes will be formally notified regarding the scope of the accommodations. Faculty will not be informed of any additional information about the diagnosis or other private details. Information may be shared with personnel responsible for facilitating your accommodations, but only to the extent that is necessary for them to support you in their role. Otherwise, this information will be kept confidential.

Student Responsibility

Although the Office of Disability Resources will notify your professors of your accommodations, it is your responsibility to meet with them to discuss the accommodations you require. In particular, if you require an accommodation that makes it difficult for you to take an in-class exam during the regular class period, you must fill out the Exam Authorization Form (.pdf) at least seven working days before the exam.


Accommodations that substantially alter the integrity of the educational experience will not be granted. Accommodations that are considered unsustainable may not be allowed.


Harvey Mudd College operates in accordance with the principles of the Association on Higher Education and Disabilities (AHEAD). In particular, we require documentation to meet its “Seven Essential Elements of Quality Disability Documentation.” 

With respect to the documentation of learning disabilities, the specifics of our requirements are as follows:

  1. Documentation must include the results of standardized tests addressing, minimally, aptitude, achievement, and information processing.
  2. Testing must be administered by a licensed professional, such as a certified learning specialist, psychologist, or physician qualified to assess and diagnose learning disabilities. The name, title, and professional credentials of the evaluator must be clearly stated in the documentation.
  3. Testing must be current. Generally, this means that the testing must have been done in the last three years.
  4. Actual test scores must be included in the report, along with a narrative interpretation of the results.
  5. Documentation should state the accommodations being requested and explain how each compensates for the learning deficits resulting from the disability.
  6. The documentation should include a summary of the student’s educational and medical histories, insofar as they relate to the learning disability.
