Task Force on College Affordability: First Interim Report
Harvey Mudd’s Task Force on College Affordability released its first interim report, outlining early findings on tuition structures and financial aid. Formed in early 2024, the Task Force aims to ensure access to an HMC education for all students, regardless of financial background. The task force gathered input from alumni, trustees and industry leaders for this first interim report, and then presented it to the community for feedback to help shape strategic recommendations.

Three Project Teams Selected to Advance to Innovation Accelerator Laboratories
Three project teams that further the College’s strategic plan were selected to move on to the next phase of development, Innovation Accelerator Laboratory. Each of these three project teams will receive $240,000 over the next three years to help further develop their projects.

First Innovation Showcase Held on Campus
On April 4, 2025, Harvey Mudd held its first Innovation Showcase held its first Innovation Showcase where six Innovation Accelerator projects were presented to key stakeholders for consideration to advance to the seed stage of funding. The Innovation Showcase included a welcome address from President Nembhard, Innovation Accelerator proposal pitches from our six teams, an overview of Harvey Mudd’s campus master plan, presentations that highlighted HMC’s curricular advances in STEM and a digital poster session with the Innovation Accelerator teams.

Six Innovation Accelerator (IA) Proposals Selected to Advance
Six Proposals That Moved Forward to Seed Stage Funding and Spring IA Summit
After an engaged review by a group of faculty, staff, students and trustees of the 21 exciting proposals put forth by the community, six proposals were selected advance to the next step in the Innovation Accelerator process and prepare to pitch their proposals at the Innovation Accelerator Summit. Each proposal team received $20,000 (or $40,000 for combined proposals) to use in initiating their work.

Strategic Plan Approved by Board of Trustees
The final draft of the strategic plan, STEM for a Better World, was approved by the board of trustees on January 25, 2025. The plan is organized into four overarching goals, supported by specific objectives and actions, which were developed via community-wide engagement, working groups and task forces.

Task Force on Clinic and Corporate Partnerships Releases Final Report
The Task Force on Clinic and Corporate released three interim reports over the course of eight months, outlining efforts to strengthen Harvey Mudd’s Clinic Program and institutional partnerships. This final report summarized key findings and refined recommendations informed by extensive community engagement.

Call for Innovation Accelerator Proposals
Harvey Mudd launched the Innovation Accelerator to fund bold, forward-thinking initiatives aligned with the Strategic Plan. Faculty and staff were invited to submit two-page proposals by October 25, 2024, with up to $1.08 million in grants available. Office hours and community engagement sessions supported idea development for the selection process and a planned April 2025 Innovation Accelerator Summit.

Strategic Planning Task Force on Clinic and Corporate Partnerships Established
Created as a result of the College-wide SOAR (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, Results) analysis, which used a strengths-based approach to identify HMC’s core assets and ambitions, the Strategic Planning Task Force on Clinic and Corporate Partnerships was launched. Formed in response to community interest, the task force was charged with evaluating the Clinic Program and expanding external partnerships. It aimed to gather input from students, faculty, staff, and alumni to shape recommendations that align with HMC’s strategic goals and strengthen experiential learning opportunities.

Steering Committee Synthesizes Strategic Priorities
The steering committee led the strategic planning process, integrating input from the three working groups and guiding their efforts. Members provided support, helped resolve issues, and ensured coordination. They synthesized ideas into clear strategic priorities and drafted goals to shape the College’s future and inform its next fundraising campaign.

March 1, 2024
Inauguration Ceremony for President Harriet B. Nembhard
On Feb. 29 and March 1, Harvey Mudd College welcomed alumni, students, faculty, staff, trustees, delegates, partners and friends to inaugurate Harriet B. Nembhard as the sixth president in the College’s 69-year history. The two-day celebration included the formal investiture ceremony on March 1, an Annenberg Speaker Series talk, a community service project, a gala dinner featuring a panel discussion with presidents from fellow colleges, luncheons, student musical and dance performances, a dance party and more.

SOAR Analysis and Strategic Planning Working Groups Launched
HMC conducted a SOAR (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, Results) analysis to identify the College’s core assets and bold future ambitions through a strengths-based lens. The insights gathered formed the foundation for the College’s strategic priorities. Following the analysis, three working groups: Imagining Harvey Mudd, Academic Vision, and Student Experience, were created to explore big ideas, future academic directions, and co-curricular improvements. Each group developed recommendations that informed the final strategic plan.

Strategic Planning Task Force of College Affordability Established
The Strategic Planning Task Force on College Affordability was charged with exploring tuition structures and innovative approaches to price differentiation, and making recommendations to further the College’s strategic planning goal of ensuring access to HMC education for all students, regardless of their personal financial circumstances.
October 20, 2023
100 Days of Community Connections Report Released
President Harriet B. Nembhard released the 100 Days of Community Connections report, capturing insights from over 100 meetings with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and trustees during her first months in office. The report identified six core themes: culture and people, student experience, academic programs, societal impact, places and spaces, and capacity building, which became foundational to the College’s strategic planning process and long-term vision for 2035.

July 1 – October 9, 2023
First 100 Days: Community Connections
In her first 100 days, President Harriet B. Nembhard launched a campus-wide listening tour, inviting students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and trustees to share their insights and aspirations for Harvey Mudd College. These conversations, along with online feedback, were compiled into the 100 Days of Community Connections report, which laid the groundwork for the College’s strategic planning process and its long-term vision for 2035.

July 1, 2023
President Harriet B. Nembhard Joins Harvey Mudd College
Harriet B. Nembhard formally began her role as the sixth president of Harvey Mudd College on July 1, 2023. Committed to advancing the College’s distinctive mission in liberal arts STEM education, she launched a series of Community Connections events to hear from students, faculty, staff, and alumni, setting the foundation for an inclusive and collaborative strategic planning process.
