Maintenance mechanic Mark Kutch is this year’s recipient of Harvey Mudd College’s Mary G. Binder Prize, which honors outstanding support staff.

Kutch began working in the Department of Facilities and Maintenance as a general maintenance mechanic in 2013. Nominators complimented his kindness, willingness to help others, skill and professionalism.

“Mark consistently goes above and beyond in his role, embodying the spirit of resourcefulness and dedication,” said a nominator. “Whether it’s troubleshooting an unexpected issue or creatively MacGyvering a solution to keep things running smoothly, his ingenuity and determination ensure that no challenge is too great.”

Another nominator commented, “The College could not run without Mark.”

Kutch said, “I’m glad to be recognized by this community for a job I enjoy doing.”

The Binder Prize honors a member of HMC’s support staff “who combines a record of exceptional service with a truly helpful and friendly attitude toward students, faculty and fellow staff members all across the College.” The prize was established in 1996 by engineering Professor Emeritus Sam Tanenbaum and his wife, Carol, in honor of Carol’s mother. It includes a $1,000 award and commemorative certificate, and Kutch’s name will be added to the Mary G. Binder Prize plaque in the foyer of Galileo Hall.

The 2025 Binder Prize Committee members were 2023 Mary G. Binder Prize winner Daniel Guerra, laboratory and stockroom manager, Department of Chemistry; Theresa Lauer, senior director for facilities, emergency preparedness and safety; Miguel Ruvalcaba, senior director for dining services and interim senior director for facilities and maintenance; Werner Zorman, holder of the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Chair in Leadership, engineering; Kyra Roy, student representative; and Haley Phillips, assistant director for human resources.

The annual Binder Prize is part of the commitment by Harvey Mudd College to foster a supportive and inclusive workplace environment.
