Message from the President

Dear members of the Harvey Mudd College community,

I write this message as Los Angeles County again prepares for another night of curfews in the wake of protests in cities across the U.S. This is a time of great challenge, extreme frustration and deep sadness in our community and in our country, with inequities and injustice all around us.

As a country, we have witnessed so much tragic death in recent days and weeks. It has become increasingly challenging for us to remember that each of these incidents and names represents a life lost and a family who is angry, hurt and grieving.

It is also a time when our values as a College community of caring for each other, our dedication to our mission statement and our deep and abiding commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity seem more important than ever before. I cannot think of a time when understanding the impact of our work on society has mattered more.

Doubtless, the coming weeks and months will bring fresh challenges to our community and to our nation.  We must stand ready to offer our expertise and passion where needed to find solutions—and be ready to offer our heartfelt support, in particular, to our students, staff, faculty, alumni, and families who have been affected by recent events.

I hope you will join me in our commitment to making this world of ours a better place. A number of individuals and offices, including the Office of Institutional Diversity, are already thinking about and planning specific programs and initiatives for our community to come together.

As a reminder, I encourage faculty and staff who may be struggling during this time to make use of our Optum Employee Assistance Program or to contact the Office of Human Resources (hr@hmc.edu)Although the Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services center is closed for the summer, our students can use telehealth counseling resources 24 hours a day, seven days per week, through our partnership with campus.health. Students who have questions about accessing the service can contact the Dean of Students (dean_of_students@hmc.edu)

Please take care of yourselves and of each other.

Sincerely,
Maria
