“Interactions between Tides and Glaciers: a Potentially Uplifting Story”
Physical oceanography is the study of dynamics within the Earth's oceans and estuaries. These dynamics occur across a range of length scales and timescales leading to a variety of behaviour (e.g., waves, currents, plumes, turbulence) that have consequences for ecosystems, people and the climate. Climate and Mathematics Professor Bobby Sanchez will introduce oceanography and the methods used to analyze ocean data, such as time-series analysis and numerical solutions to differential equations. He will use these methods to investigate tidally driven waves in a Greenland fjord. Both data and numerical modeling suggest tides could play an important role in enhancing the melt rates of glaciers.
Speaker
Bobby Sanchez is an assistant professor at Harvey Mudd College with a joint appointment between the Department of Mathematics and the Hixon Center for Climate and Environment. Prior to Harvey Mudd, he received his PhD in physical oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
This event is for: faculty, staff, students
Community Connections events provide opportunities for HMC faculty, students and staff to cultivate community, foster open conversations and share important information as together we live out our mission and shape the future of the College.
