Notary Public Services
At this time, the Division of Student Affairs does not offer on-campus Notary Public services.
Students, faculty, and staff who require notary services may visit a local notary provider in the Claremont area. This page is intended to help you prepare for your appointment.
Where to Find Notary Services
Notary services are commonly available at:
- Local banks and credit unions (may be free for account holders)
- UPS Store locations
- Postal/shipping centers
- Private notary offices
- Some law offices
We recommend contacting the provider in advance to confirm:
- Appointment requirements
- Accepted forms of identification
- Fees
- Whether your specific document can be notarized
Before Your Appointment: Important Information
A Notary Public cannot provide legal advice or determine which type of notarial act is required for your document. It is your responsibility to arrive knowing:
- What document needs to be notarized
- Whether the document requires an Acknowledgment or a Jurat
Please review your document carefully before your appointment.
Common Notarial Acts
Acknowledgment
The document may already be signed. The notary confirms that you acknowledge signing the document.
Jurat
The document must be signed in the presence of the notary, and you will swear or affirm that the contents are true and accurate.
What to Bring
Please bring all of the following to your appointment:
- Yourself
- An acceptable form of identification
- The document to be notarized, along with any related forms required for that document
Acceptable Forms of Identification
- State-issued driver’s license
- State-issued identification card
- U.S. passport (issued by the U.S. Department of State)

If you do not have an acceptable form of identification, you must bring a credible witness who does.
Copy Certification by Document Custodian (Important)
Notaries in California cannot notarize copies of documents. However, a Copy Certification by Document Custodian may be notarized instead.
If you need to certify a copy (for example, a student visa or ID):
- Bring the copy and a completed Document Custodian letter, or
- Email the letter in advance so it can be printed for your appointment
This notarial act is completed as a Jurat, and the letter must be signed in the presence of the notary.
