HMC and LA County’s Masking Guidelines Update, March 4, 2022

Dear HMC Community,

Today, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) released an update to its public health order with new indoor masking guidelines that permit establishments, businesses and other venues to eliminate indoor masking for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, except in cases of  “mega events.” This decision was made by LACDPH in conjunction with recent updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that include “Community Level Metrics” showing that the COVID-19 burden on the county’s health care system is now at a low level.

Although Harvey Mudd College falls into the group of organizations mentioned in the county’s updated guidance, at this time we are not amending the College’s current guidance that requires the use of masks (meaning well-fitting, medical grade masks, surgical masks, medical procedure masks, or higher-level respirators) when indoors or when taking class in an outdoor classroom. As a reminder, faculty and staff may request medical-grade masks through the Office of Facilities and Maintenance, and students may request them through the Dean of Students.

The College will continue to evaluate the new LACDPH Health Officer Order and determine if additional changes are needed to our COVID-19 guidance. For the latest guidance and updates, please continue to refer to the email announcements as well as to the College’s Stay Safe@Mudd website.

Sincerely,

The President’s Cabinet
