Update: Atwood Residence Hall Fire
January 21, 2026, 9:27 p.m. PTWe are writing to follow up on the earlier message regarding the fire at Atwood Residence Hall. The fire has been extinguished, and the source of the fire has been identified as an electric skateboard battery. No students were injured, and all students have been accounted for.
The LA County Fire Department is still on site. Staff from Facilities and Maintenance along with an inspector from the City of Claremont are assessing the building to determine which rooms are not habitable. Please continue to avoid the area around Atwood Residence Hall until further notice.
Staff in the Division of Student Affairs are working with students whose rooms have been impacted by the fire and smoke to provide alternative accommodations and are providing other support resources.
Continued Communication:
Our top priority is the health and safety of every member of our campus.
We are deeply grateful to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the City of Claremont, Claremont Police Department, and Campus Safety for their rapid response to this situation. We are also grateful to the staff and faculty who are on site providing emergency support to our students.
Please check back here for ongoing updates as warranted.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and support during this time.
