Margaret Lindeman joins the Climate and Environmental Sciences Colloquium to present “Ice-ocean neighborhoods: How glaciers shape Greenland’s fjord environments.”
At the margins of the Greenland Ice Sheet, many outlet glaciers reach the ocean through long narrow fjords. These marine-terminating glaciers form walls of ice that extend hundreds of meters below the ocean surface, as well as breaking off to form large icebergs that drift along the fjord. The resulting ice-ocean interactions profoundly influence the local marine environment, sustaining productive ecosystems that are integral to local communities, as well as controlling meltwater export into the North Atlantic Ocean. Lindeman will discuss how oceanographers use physics and chemistry to identify fingerprints of glacially-modified waters in Greenland fjords from field measurements, and how this approach led to a surprising finding about glaciers’ role in the cycling of mercury, a environmental toxicant.
Lindeman is a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University, where she studies ice-ocean interactions. Her research includes observational studies of iceberg melt and ice shelf cavity circulation in Greenland, as well as modeling of small scale Arctic sea ice processes.
