I was Olivia’s Advanced Chinese instructor this semester. She always sat next to the door in the classroom. Most of the time when I went to the classroom, she had already arrived, and as soon as I opened the door, I would see her smiling at me. Her smile was always warm and sincere. Olivia was an outstanding student. Olivia consistently approached learning Chinese with passion and dedication. She put in her best effort to prepare thoroughly for every exam. For each presentation, she prepared meticulously.

I struggle to put words down to describe how wonderful Olivia was. I wish I had more time to spend with her, I wish I knew just how quickly things could all change. I wish I could talk with her about coffee again. I hope she is at peace.

She was someone you could always count on to brighten your life by simply existing, and my days are forever dimmed without her presence. She made each day worth looking forward to. Olivia was a bright and kind soul, and it was a privilege to have her in my Intermediate Chinese class during Fall 2023. I will never forget the time she came to my office to discuss her final exam presentation, in which she explored the question: Does the internet bring us closer to our friends, or does it drive us further apart? Olivia always responded to my questions with kindness and respect, and her warmth was felt by everyone around her. Words cannot express my sadness for you during this incredibly difficult time. I will forever be grateful to have had Olivia in my class.
