Professor Evans was an awesome instructor and left a vivid impression – one of the few profs that always get mentioned when sharing pleasant anecdotes with fellow alumni years after graduating. He was fairly popular when I went to Mudd, but always made time for each student and was able to give directed / personalized feedback.

When I came for my campus interview, Gary took me on a walking tour of the five colleges. His hearty laughter broke out when I told him just how dismayed my mother would be to see olives left on the ground at Scripps College. Having traveled far and wide, he understood how the old generation would feel about squandering something like that. A man who wore many hats, Gary had a zest for life – not just for numbers. He met the love of his life far from home, in Panama City. He could not have been prouder of their two daughters and grandchildren. Gary’s strong character will bring a smile to those of us who will continue to remember him.

I quoted Evans, post Mudd, more than any other professor. I would say I had a concentration in Evans in addition to my major.
He made me keenly aware of how unusual we were as Mudders and that world (and most people) did not behave and think in same way.

Prof Evans taught Macro econ to me (most of which I’ve forgotten), but I’ll never forget how kind he was. He encouraged my pursuit of a double
Major despite it not making much economic sense. We both were avid cyclists and he’d often tell me stories of some of his recent rides. He was a great teacher.

He was an important presence in the HMC community for decades and got countless students interested in entrepreneurship. He was the one professor I kept in touch with since my time at Mudd in the mid 80s to now.

Aside from his enormous academic contributions, Gary enjoyed life off the HMC campus as well. He was an avid golfer and cyclist, two activities I had occasion to share with him on early mornings (breakfast burrito golf) and Saturdays (Staff/Faculty Bike Rides). I trust that he, Dick Olson, and Sheldon Wettack have already played several rounds together, with many more to come. Keep that swing smooth and easy, Gary.

I will always remember Gary’s enthusiasm, energy, and drive. He did so much for the Harvey Mudd community as a whole and for me personally. He got me interested in economics and entrepreneurship, and he helped me gain a footing in my career after graduation. He always went above and beyond to support his students and his impact was felt far and wide. Thank you for everything, Gary, and I’ll miss you dearly.

Evans was always willing to go above and beyond for our students. His presence was fierce and will not be forgotten.

Gary exemplified how amazing Harvey Mudd College can be, and how amazing someone can be at Harvey Mudd College. From his dynamic lecturing style for students, to his persuasiveness at faculty meetings, to his larger than life personality and presence in the AHS hallway, we all had so much to learn and emulate from Gary. On top of all I gained from him as a colleague, I still drive the car the he sold me. Thanks for everything Gary!

Gary was a great fit for Harvey Mudd. Like the college, he was idiosyncratic, a true original. His passion for economics and entrepreneurship gave him real depth as a colleague, but his wide-ranging interests in other areas—from film, to literature, to gardening—gave him the kind of breadth we seek to foster in our students, and that breadth made him a wonderful conversationalist to have on the hall. There was always a good chat to be had just inside Professor Evans’s office. I miss that.
