Grades 4 - 12: A free tutoring service

What is Homework Hotline?

The Harvey Mudd College (HMC) Homework Hotline is an over-the-phone, mathematics and science tutoring service for students in grades 4—12. Our program is modeled after the successful Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) Homework Hotline established in 1991.

Who can use Homework Hotline?

Students in grades 4–12 who need assistance with their mathematics and science assignments (i.e. homework, studying for a test).

Is Homework Hotline free?

Yes. Both the phone call and the tutoring are free to all student callers. Also, there is no need to register or go anywhere. Students call from the safety and comfort of their homes.

What do students need during a tutoring session?

What should I expect from a Homework Hotline tutoring session?

A homework hotline tutor will guide the student caller with guiding questions and encourage the student to be an active participant in his/her learning. The tutor will use the student's prior knowledge and encourage student to use all available resources first. The tutor will also invite the student to write down procedural steps in his/her own words to help him/her solve other similar problems on his/her own.

The goal of the tutor is to help the student caller with one homework question, and then encourage him/her to try solving similar problems on his/her own. The student caller is invited to call the homework hotline again, if s/he gets stuck on another problem (similar or different to current question).

Calendar

We are committed to guiding student callers through their math and/or science homework questions, Sunday through Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., yet there are certain days of the academic year when we will be closed.

We are closed during national holidays; and Harvey Mudd College semester breaks and finals week. Please view our academic year calendar for specific dates. (pdf)

About Homework Hotline

Harvey Mudd College (HMC) partnered with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) in Terre Haute, Indiana to replicate RHIT's Homework Hotline in our local communities. RHIT shared its system with HMC, provided technical advice for its implementation, and continues to be a valued collaborator. This program is funded by Marilyn and James Simons, and Harvey Mudd College.

...More

The HMC Homework Hotline opened its toll-free telephone lines (1-877-8 ASK-HMC) to 6-12 graders from both Claremont and Pomona Unified School Districts on February 1, 2010, with a mission to help students reinforce math and science concepts, develop good study skills and become independent learners.

In September 2010, the Homework Hotline expanded its hours, the grades served, and the subjects tutored. Currently, the HMC Homework Hotline provides both mathematics and science tutoring to students in grades 4-12.

The tutoring is a free service for all students. Students, in grades 4-12, are invited to call the HMC Homework Hotline toll-free at 1-877-8 ASK-HMC, Sunday through Thursday, 6PM to 9PM (Pacific Standard Time). A Harvey Mudd College tutor will guide every student caller to successfully solve his/her homework question.
