{"id":948,"date":"2018-03-23T10:34:37","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T17:34:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/study-abroad\/?page_id=948"},"modified":"2024-09-04T08:12:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-04T15:12:45","slug":"international-travel-policy-effective-march-1-2018","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/study-abroad\/approved-applicants\/international-travel-policy-effective-march-1-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"International Travel Policy \u2013 Effective March 1, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On January 10, 2018 the United States Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs changed the system by which they rate and communicate health and safety conditions in countries or specific regions of countries.<\/p>\n<h2>What you Need to Know<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-949\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/study-abroad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2018\/03\/advisory-ratings.png\" alt=\"Four travel advisory rating levels.\" width=\"265\" height=\"209\" \/>International destinations now have a numeric \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/traveladvisories\/traveladvisories.html\">Travel Advisory<\/a>\u201d level. Each country is rated 1 \u2013 4 for overall safety. \u201cTravel Advisories at Levels 2-4 will contain clear reasons for the level assigned, using established risk indicators and specific advice to U.S. citizens who choose to travel there. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>C \u2013 Crime:<\/strong> Widespread violent or organized crime is present in areas of the country. Local law enforcement may have limited ability to respond to serious crimes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>T \u2013 Terrorism:<\/strong> Terrorist attacks have occurred and\/or specific threats against civilians, groups, or other targets may exist.<\/li>\n<li><strong>U \u2013 Civil Unrest:<\/strong> Political, economic, religious, and\/or ethnic instability exists and may cause violence, major disruptions, and\/or safety risks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>H \u2013 Health:<\/strong> Health risks, including current disease outbreaks or a crisis that disrupts a country\u2019s medical infrastructure, are present. The issuance of a Centers for Disease Control Travel Notice may also be a factor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>N \u2013 Natural Disaster:<\/strong> A natural disaster, or its aftermath, poses danger.<\/li>\n<li><strong>E \u2013 Time-limited Event:<\/strong> Short-term event, such as elections, sporting events, or other incidents that may pose safety risks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>O \u2013 Other:<\/strong> There are potential risks not covered by previous risk indicators. Read the country\u2019s Travel Advisory for details.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, in many cases, the overall country may have one numeric rating, but certain regions have higher advisory levels either indicated by regional numeric ratings or in the text describing such regions, such as (at the time of this printing) this example from Ecuador.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/study-abroad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2018\/03\/ecuador-example.png\" alt=\"Travel rating example.
