Student Pre-Travel Requirements

  • Mandatory personal comprehensive health insurance that will cover the student while abroad.
  • Mandatory health screening to address any health and safety concerns prior to departure.
  • Mandatory orientation including:
    • General health and safety information for international travel.
    • Basic information on medications and immunizations.
    • Online workshop for dealing with culture shock and adjustment.
    • Discussion of drugs and alcohol use and other behavior issues.
  • Additional optional student resources including:
    • Resources for specific populations (LGBTQ, women, students of color).
    • Parent information on the Office of Study Abroad website.
    • On-site orientation upon arrival by provider/host institution.
  • Mandatory submission of all Harvey Mudd College study abroad forms by April 30 for fall study abroad and November 30 for spring study abroad.
  • Mandatory travel registration in the World Aware Travel Tracker Database. 
  • Review host country travel information at Travel.State.Gov. The Department of State (DOS) has adopted a new travel advisory system. Students, and their families, are encouraged to review the updated information.
  • Recommendations:
    • Register for the U.S. Depart of State (USDOS), Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
    • Review the USDOS, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) resources for their planned destination.
