As the assistant vice president for student affairs, Leslie Hughes is responsible for the administration and management of residential life and student activities. Leslie works with the assistant dean for residential life, proctors and mentors as they provide programming and education designed to foster community. The residential life team focuses on integrating principles of wellness, diversity, community engagement and opportunities for staff and faculty interaction for students. Leslie also works with the associate dean for student activities and the associate director of student activities to coordinate a variety of activities on campus designed to promote a robust, healthy and well-balanced student experience. In her role, she provides guidance in student behavioral matters and advises the disciplinary board chair in all aspects of the judicial process. In addition, she serves as the Title IX coordinator and focuses on empowerment, advocacy and support for students.
Dean Leslie joined the Division of Student Affairs in 2014 as the associate dean of students. Prior to joining Harvey Mudd, she worked as the assistant dean of students at Salem College in North Carolina for seven years. In her role as assistant dean, she provided leadership to approximately 500 residential students, 25 resident assistants and three residential coordinators.
Leslie holds an MEd in student personnel administration in higher education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Leslie is also a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University, where she earned her B.S. in art therapy.
