ASHMC stands for Associated Students of Harvey Mudd College. Every due-paying student at Harvey Mudd College is a member of ASHMC, able to take advantage of all ASHMC sponsored extracurricular and social events as well as participate in many facets student governance. ASHMC members are bound by the Harvey Mudd College Honor Code and expected to maintain proper conduct at all times in both academic and extracurricular activities.
Oversight of ASHMC activities and policies is placed in the hands of the ASHMC Senate, chaired by the senate chair and composed of fourteen voting members as well as several non-voting members, and the ASHMC Executive Board, chaired by the president and composed of five voting members as well as some non-voting members.
The ASHMC Senate consists of both elected and appointed officers. The elected officers meet every Friday at noon in the Hoch-Shanahan Dining Commons and every Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Riggs Room, upstairs in the Linde Activities Center. Meetings typically run about between an hour and an hour and a half. If you would like to be a member of ASHMC Council, come to an ASHMC meeting to see how it all works! Consult the current list of ASHMC members to see what positions are currently available and the election page to view election timelines and results. Each position has different responsibilities and the time commitment varies so feel free to ask previous or current members about their work. Various appointments are made to ASHMC committees once a year as well. These committees generally require less time commitment than Senate or Executive Board officer positions and are a nice way to get involved in ASHMC as an underclassman.
ASHMC Legal Status and Budget
ASHMC is completely independent of, though still affiliated with, the institution of Harvey Mudd College. We are a California 501(c)4 corporation whose mission is to serve the Harvey Mudd College student body. We receive dues from every student enrolled in the College and maintain a revenue stream of around $220,000 each year. For the 2014–2015 academic year, $190,000 was budgeted for student activities, including $60,000 for parties, and $27,000 for CAP. We also appoint and maintain representatives to several Harvey Mudd committees, including the Faculty Executive Committee, the Teaching and Learning Committee, the Computer Committee, the Board of Trustees Educational Planning Committee, the Board of Trustees Student Affairs Committee, the Board of Trustees Campus Planning and Physical Plant Committee, and the Board of Trustees itself.
