{"id":274,"date":"2006-12-12T08:47:10","date_gmt":"2006-12-12T16:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/mathematics\/?p=274"},"modified":"2006-12-12T08:47:10","modified_gmt":"2006-12-12T16:47:10","slug":"mathematics-departmental-news-for-2006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/mathematics\/2006\/12\/12\/mathematics-departmental-news-for-2006\/","title":{"rendered":"Mathematics Departmental News for 2006"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article\">\n<h2>Professor Arthur Benjamin Chosen as MAA&#8217;s P\u00f3lya Lecturer (11\/21\/2006)<\/h2>\n<p>Professor Arthur Benjamin is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Mathematical Association of America\">MAA<\/abbr><\/a>&#8216;s sixteenth George P\u00f3lya Lecturer.<\/p>\n<p>The award, named for renowned teacher and writer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_P%C3%B3lya\">George P\u00f3lya<\/a> (1887\u20131985), a Hungarian-born mathematician, is meant to encourage \u201cthe high quality of exposition which the Mathematical Association of America seeks to encourage\u201d. It pays recipients&#8217; expenses for giving talks at MAA regional section meetings.<\/p>\n<h2>MAA MathFest 2006 News (10\/02\/2006)<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article\">\n<p><span class=\"hl\">Dan Walton &#8217;07<\/span> won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siam.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics\">SIAM<\/abbr><\/a> (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) Award for his presentation on \u201cOptimal Resource Allocation to Deter a Terrorist\u201d at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Mathematical Association of America\">MAA<\/abbr><\/a> Mathfest held in Knoxville, Tennessee. Dan&#8217;s talk is based on summer research at HMC with <span class=\"hl\">Professor Susan Martonosi<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hl\">Professor Francis Su<\/span> delivered the eighth annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/awards\/leitzel.html\">James R. Leitzel Lecture<\/a> on \u201cTeaching Research: Encouraging Discoveries\u201d. The Leitzel Lecture provides a forum for the presentation and discussion of \u201cissues or innovations in mathematical sciences education at the undergraduate or graduate level\u201d, and, in so doing, honors the many contributions of James R.C. Leitzel to the improvement of mathematical sciences education.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article\">\n<h2>Professor Lesley Ward receives national Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching (5\/2006)<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"hl\">Professor Lesley Ward<\/span> has been named a 2006 recipient of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Mathematical Association of America\">Mathematical Association of America<\/abbr><\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/programs\/maa-awards\/teaching-awards\/henry-l-alder-award\">Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Beginning Faculty Member<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This award honors beginning college or university faculty whose teaching has been extraordinarily successful and whose effectiveness in teaching undergraduate mathematics is shown to have influence beyond their own classrooms. Professor Ward was cited for her excellence in teaching, for innovative work in redesigning the core math curriculum at HMC, for her work on making the department&#8217;s senior-thesis requirement a cohesive program, for numerous (and award-winning) papers with students, for mentoring many women students in mathematics, and for courses she has given at Park City and IAS\/Princeton.<\/p>\n<p>This is the third year the MAA has given the award and the second year a member of the faculty of the Harvey Mudd College&#8217;s Department of Mathematics has been recognized (<span class=\"hl\">Professor Francis Su<\/span> was a recipient in 2004).<\/p>\n<h2>Math Graduates Win Five NSF Fellowships; Five Honorable Mentions (4\/06)<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article\">\n<p>Five math majors from Harvey Mudd have won prestigious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\"><abbr title=\"National Science Foundation\">National Science Foundation<\/abbr><\/a> Graduate Research Fellowships this year, and five more won honorable mentions in this year&#8217;s competition! The awardees are: <span class=\"hl\">Stephanie Moyerman &#8217;06<\/span> (math and physics), <span class=\"hl\">Susanna Ricco &#8217;06<\/span> (joint CS-math), <span class=\"hl\">Jeff Jauregui &#8217;05<\/span> (math), <span class=\"hl\">Kenny Maples &#8217;06<\/span> (math and engineering), and <span class=\"hl\">Michael Vrable &#8217;04<\/span> (joint CS-math). The fellowships provide $30,000\/year plus $10,500 cost of education allowance for 3 years of graduate study.<\/p>\n<p>Five more HMC math majors or alumni won honorable mentions: <span class=\"hl\">Robin Baur<\/span>, <span class=\"hl\">Joe Majkut<\/span>, <span class=\"hl\">Alan Davidson<\/span>, <span class=\"hl\">Jason Murcko<\/span>, and <span class=\"hl\">Tim Carnes<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article\">\n<h2><cite>AMS Notices<\/cite> Article About the HMC Mathematics Department. (4\/2006)<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/notices\/\"><cite>American Mathematical Society Notices<\/cite><\/a> included and article,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/notices\/200604\/comm-harveymudd.pdf\">Harvey Mudd Mathematics Department Garners AMS Award (PDF)<\/a>,\u00a0in its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/notices\/200604\/200604-toc.html\">April, 2006, issue<\/a> about the reasons that the department won the first AMS Award for Exemplary Program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article\">\n<h2>Professor de Pillis Gives Keynote Addresses at College of the Redwoods&#8217; Celebration of Women in Math, Science, and Engineering (4\/2006)<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"hl\">Professor Lisette de Pillis<\/span> gave two keynote addresses the week of April 6 during the week-long Celebration of Women in Math, Science, and Engineering at College of the Redwoods. One was a keynote lecture on \u201cUsing Mathematics to Understand Cancer\u201d; the second was an evening public talk: \u201cWhen Medicine and Mathematics Meet\u201d. In conjunction with the event, Professor de Pillis appeared in radio spots and newspaper advertisements.<\/p>\n<p>This year was the second year the College of the Redwoods has run the celebration. <span class=\"hl\">Professor Lesley Ward<\/span> of HMC gave the first keynote address last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article\">\n<h2>Professor Ward Gives Plenary Address at the Southwestern MAA Sectional Meeting (4\/2006)<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"hl\">Professor Lesley Ward<\/span> was invited to give a <a href=\"http:\/\/oak.ucc.nau.edu\/hagood\/MAASW\/invitedtalks2006.html\">plenary lecture<\/a> at the Southwestern Sectional Meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Mathematical Association of America\">Mathematical Association of America<\/abbr><\/a>. She spoke about the Harvey Mudd College <a href=\"https:\/\/wpdev.hmc.edu\/mathematics\/mathematics-research-experience-thesis-or-clinic\/\">mathematics Clinic program<\/a>. She also gave a colloquium at the University of Arizona.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article\">\n<h2>Professor Benjamin Wins Beckenbach Book Prize (1\/2006)<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"hl\">Professor Arthur Benjamin<\/span> and coauthor Jenny Quinn received the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Mathematical Association of America\">Mathematical Association of America<\/abbr><\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/programs\/maa-awards\/writing-awards\/beckenbach-book-prize\">Beckenbach Book Prize<\/a> for their book <cite>Proofs that Really Count: The Art of Combinatorial Proof<\/cite>. The Beckenbach Prize is awarded to \u201cdistinguished, innovative MAA books\u201d that are \u201ctruly outstanding\u201d. The winning book is an introduction to combinatorial proofs and counting arguments. \u201cFew mathematicians are immune to the limpid charms of a clever counting argument,\u201d says the citation, noting that such charms are in abundant display in the book by Benjamin and Quinn. The award was presented at the National Joint Meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/\"><abbr title=\"American Mathematical Society\">AMS<\/abbr><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Mathematical Association of America\">MAA<\/abbr><\/a> in January, 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations Art &amp; Jenny!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article\">\n<h2>Professor Su Gives Invited Address at National MAA Meeting (1\/2006)<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"hl\">Professor Francis Su<\/span> presented the 2006 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Mathematical Association of America\">MAA<\/abbr><\/a> Invited Address at the annual Joint Meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/\"><abbr title=\"American Mathematical Society\">American Mathematical Society<\/abbr><\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Mathematical Association of America\">Mathematical Association of America<\/abbr><\/a>. Professor Su presented the talk \u201cPreference Sets, Graphs, and Voting in Agreeable Societies\u201d. His talk outlined his recent research related to preference sets and voting theory. He also highlighted various contributions that Harvey Mudd students have made, including those by <span class=\"hl\">Debbie Berg &#8217;06<\/span> and <span class=\"hl\">Andy Neidermaier &#8217;05<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article\">\n<h2>Eight Harvey Mudd College Students Present Research at National Math Meetings (1\/2006)<\/h2>\n<p>Mathematics majors <span class=\"hl\">Robin Baur &#8217;06<\/span>, <span class=\"hl\">Debbie Berg &#8217;06<\/span>, <span class=\"hl\">Tristan Brand &#8217;06<\/span>, <span class=\"hl\">Alex Eustis &#8217;06<\/span>, <span class=\"hl\">Julijana Gjorgjieva &#8217;06<\/span>, <span class=\"hl\">Tyler Seacrest &#8217;06<\/span>, <span class=\"hl\">Marie Jameson &#8217;07<\/span>, and <span class=\"hl\">Greg Minton &#8217;08<\/span> made presentations at the Annual Joint Meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/\"><abbr title=\"American Mathematical Society\">American Mathematical Society<\/abbr><\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Mathematical Association of America\">Mathematical Association of America<\/abbr><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Berg, Eustis, Gjorgjieva, and Seacrest presented fifteen-minute talks on their senior-thesis projects; Baur presented a poster on her senior thesis.
