(Fletcher Nickerson, HMC Math 2022)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A full year of either Senior Thesis (Math 197) or Mathematics Clinic (Math 193) is required for the mathematics major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior thesis offers the student, guided by the faculty advisor, a chance to experience a taste of the life of a professional research mathematician. The work is largely independent with guidance from the research advisor. Students should also look through some past senior theses and Clinic projects; these are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/mathematics\/mathematics-thesis-clinic\/welcome-to-the-math-senior-thesis-homepage\/senior-thesis-archives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">archived<\/a>\u00a0on the math department\u2019s website. Be sure to also check out the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/mathematics\/capstone\/senior-thesis\/hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of current thesis students<\/a>\u00a0and links to their websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Projects and Advisors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need to choose a topic area and advisor for a thesis project. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/mathematics\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mathematics research page<\/a>&nbsp;briefly summarizes faculty research areas, which may be helpful in brainstorming possible&nbsp;thesis projects or advisors. While completing original mathematical research is highly desirable, doing so is not a requirement of a senior thesis project.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scholarship.claremont.edu\/hmc_theses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Previous senior theses<\/a>&nbsp;may also be a good source of ideas or other inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll get a copy of the Capstone Research Experience preference\/application form from the faculty in February\u2014fill it in and submit it to the department for review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each thesis student has an advisor and a second reader, at least one of whom should be Mudd math faculty. If you wish to do research with an advisor who is not in the HMC mathematics department,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your thesis must have sufficient mathematical content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will need a second reader who is a Mudd math professor<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>To get an outside advisor approved, submit a petition to the department via the department chair describing your planned research project and the level of its mathematical content. You will need to include the name and contact information of your project\u2019s external faculty advisor, as well as the name of the Mudd professor who has agreed to serve as your second reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Chavin Prize<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who write a senior thesis (or another mathematical paper) are eligible to receive the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/mathematics\/program\/mathematics-department-awards\/#chavin\">Chavin Prize<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information about other awards and prizes awarded by the department can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/mathematics\/program\/mathematics-department-awards\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"71\">Departmental Awards and Prizes<\/a> page.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why Take Thesis?
