He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics and an M.Sc. in Data Science from the University of Montana, where he was awarded the Bertha Morton Scholarship, which recognizes the top 5% of graduate students across the university for academic excellence and research achievement. He is a recipient of the 2026 AMS-Simons Research Enhancement Grant for PUI Faculty and the 2025–2026 Exemplary Teaching Award from the University of Evansville.

Khormali’s research spans three interconnected areas: graph theory and combinatorics (including link-irregular graphs, graph indices, and Turán numbers for graphs and hypergraphs), topological data analysis and machine learning (applied to network analysis, anomaly detection, two-sided matching markets, and tennis analytics), and the history of mathematics (particularly recovering and extending ideas from medieval Arabic-Persian mathematical sources into modern frameworks). His work has appeared in over 50 publications and includes applied collaborations with the U.S. Forest Service on spatial modeling of bark beetle outbreaks and forest health.

Undergraduate students are central to Khormali’s research program. At the University of Evansville, he involved students through independent studies that grew into publishable work, research-oriented courses, summer opportunities, and community-engaged data science projects with partners including the U.S. Forest Service, the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Berry Plastics, Urban Seeds, the Center for Civic Education, and public-facing data portals on school insights and traffic safety in southern Indiana. Mentees from his group have received national recognition, including the 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholarship, an Honorable Mention from the American Statistical Association’s undergraduate project competition, and presentations at the Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Conference. This community-engaged work was recognized with the Emerging ChangeLab Coach of the Year Award from the University of Evansville and the Leader in Technology Award from Leadership Everyone in Evansville.

Omid Khormali, PhD, Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics, comes to Harvey Mudd from the University of Evansville, where he was […]

["post-6046","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
