His research interests include nonlinear analysis, mathematical ecology, dynamical systems, and Polanyi\u2019s theory of personal knowledge. His teaching interests include any course with a derivative (e.g., multivariable calculus, differential equations, complex analysis, dynamical systems, mathematical biology, PDEs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacobsen received his Bachelor\u2019s and Master\u2019s degrees in Mathematics from California Polytechnic State University (SLO) and his Ph.D. from the University of Utah where he studied bifurcation theory for Monge-Ampere and k-Hessian equations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At HMC he serves as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/dean-of-faculty\/dof-staff\/\">Associate Dean for Special Projects<\/a> and has previously served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2010 to 2015, Vice President for Student Affairs from 2015 to 2018, and Chair of the Mathematics Department from 2019 &#8211; 2024. In 2018 he was awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/2018\/05\/17\/jacobsen-awarded-mudd-prize\/\">Henry T.
