His research interests include nonlinear analysis, mathematical ecology, dynamical systems, and Polanyi\u2019s theory of personal knowledge. His teaching interests include any course with a derivative (e.g., multivariable calculus, differential equations, complex analysis, dynamical systems, mathematical biology, PDEs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacobsen received his Bachelor\u2019s and Master\u2019s degrees in Mathematics from California Polytechnic State University (SLO) and his Ph.D. from the University of Utah where he studied bifurcation theory for Monge-Ampere and k-Hessian equations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At HMC he served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2010 to 2015, Vice President for Student Affairs from 2015 to 2018, and Chair of the Mathematics Department from 2019 &#8211; 2024. In 2018 he was awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/2018\/05\/17\/jacobsen-awarded-mudd-prize\/\">Henry T.
