Just as bad writing is often an indication of an incomplete grasp of complex material, good writing is a reflection of a clear, concise and in-depth understanding of a literature, idea or argument<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students learn what constitutes good writing in your discipline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Formal vs. Informal Writing Assignments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are dozens of kinds of writing you can assign, from one-minute quick writes in class to formal research papers and&nbsp;informal writing assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sequence the Assignment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sequencing the assignment ensures that students take time to develop their ideas and refine their product. It also guards against plagiarism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Require draft submissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Require peer reviews in class or as a homework assignment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage Writing Center consultations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For longer assignments, require a series of submissions culminating in a final draft (thesis proposal, hypothesis, annotated bibliography, rough draft, reviewed draft, sections of the paper)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Define Your Evaluation Criteria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Determine What Relative Weight will You Give to:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Original Thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Synthesis of Concepts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integration of Sources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structure and Integrity of Argument<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quality of Evidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grammar and Mechanics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are using a grading rubric, share it with the students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why Assign Writing?
