{"id":3171,"date":"2025-09-08T13:10:30","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T20:10:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/hsa\/?page_id=3171"},"modified":"2026-08-20T14:19:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T21:19:49","slug":"jia-yi-gu","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/hsa\/faculty-staff\/jia-yi-gu\/","title":{"rendered":"Jia Yi Gu"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assistant Professor of Architecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am a Los Angeles-based architectural scholar, curator, and designer whose research explores the materiality of buildings and the history of cultural techniques in architecture. I develop research and curatorial projects, publications, and programs about architecture and its wide-ranging practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an architectural historian, my research examines materials as sites of empirical-knowledge production in twentieth-century architecture\u2014the testing protocols, mock-ups, and experimental infrastructures through which architects and industry established authority over unfamiliar building materials. My dissertation-related work focuses on modeling, mock-ups, and material testing practices in the office of Eero Saarinen and Associates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/hsa\/faculty-staff\/\">Assistant Professor of Architecture<\/a> in the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts at Harvey Mudd College and one-half of the architecture and research studio <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spinagu.com\/\">Spinagu<\/a>.&nbsp; For over a decade, I served as director and curator of two small and unusual architecture institutions <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makcenter.org\/\">MAK Center for Art and Architecture<\/a> at the Schindler House and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.materialsandapplications.org\/\">Materials &amp; Applications<\/a>, a Los Angeles-based project space for experimental architecture. I am a Board member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fccwla.org\/\">Feminist Center for Creative Work<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, I co-curated the Getty PST ART project Material Acts, an interdisciplinary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.materialacts.com\/\">research initiative,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/pst.art\/en\/exhibitions\/material-acts\">exhibition<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.craftcontemporaryshop.org\/products\/material-acts-experimentation-in-architecture-and-design\">publication<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/arch.usc.edu\/events\/material-acts\">symposium<\/a> exploring material experimentation in design and architecture at the intersections of architecture, craft, and science, presented at Craft Contemporary. I am co-curator of the exhibition <em>Unknowing Los Angeles,<\/em> a history of postmodern Los Angeles architecture with Gary Riichir\u014d Fox and Aurora Tang.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside my historical scholarship, I work with, support, and advocate for small art and architecture organizations.
