Can the intersection of fairness, randomness, engineering, and art inspire our sense of agency as a citizen?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single\"><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-image-wrapper\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/k1.png\" alt=\"kleroterion\" width=\"768\" height=\"450\"\/><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-content-wrapper\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-heading\">The Kleroterion as inspiration<\/h2><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-copy\">\n<p>At the dawn of Athenian democracy 2,500 years ago, the Kleroterion served as a device to randomly select citizens for public offices and juries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, artist Taryn Simon reimagined this ancient tool as a modern sculpture to spark dialogue about contemporary democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Game of Democracy course uses the Kleroterion as an organizing metaphor for a class in which students address issues in civic life by designing and building their own &#8220;devices of democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<span class=\"wp-block-mudd-button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/course-description-the-game-of-democracy\/\"><span>Course description<\/span><\/a><\/span>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-page-feature\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/ken-and-student-closer.jpg)\"><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-page-feature-inner\"><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-page-feature-content\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-mudd-page-feature-heading\">Democracy as a design challenge<\/h2>\n<p>Creating mechanisms that promote fairness, transparency and civic engagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<span class=\"wp-block-mudd-button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/course-description-the-game-of-democracy\/\"><span>Course description<\/span><\/a><\/span>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single\"><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-image-wrapper\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/ken-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"586\"\/><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-content-wrapper\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-heading\">Examine, design, build. <\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-sub-heading\">Through readings, guest lectures and discussions, students study current challenges in our democracy and prototype devices that address issues through engineering, artistic practice and mathematical thinking.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-single-copy\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a final project, students create their own \u201cdevices of democracy\u201d to foster more just civic processes. The devices will on displayed in an interactive exhibition in Sprague Gallery April 30-May 7.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase\"><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-heading-wrapper\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-heading h2\">Building &#8220;Devices of Democracy&#8221;<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-content-wrapper\" data-card-count=\"9\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card\"><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/jerry-the-game\/\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-img\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/leilani-1.jpg);\"><\/span><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-text\">Leilani Elkaslasy<\/span><\/a><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-copy\">Device: Gerry the Game. Goal: Address the deepening partisan divide by engineering connection. Lower audience defenses, facilitate interaction and allow isolated viewers to become active participants in an important and necessary conversation.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card\"><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/pillar-of-democracy\/\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-img\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/student-with-drawing.jpg);\"><\/span><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-text\">Ben Simpson<\/span><\/a><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-copy\">Device: Pillar of Democracy. Goal: Address negative beliefs about voter effectiveness by gamifying voting to make engagement more fun. Increase voter participation, leading to more representative leaders and better government for all people.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card\"><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/decisions-decisions-choices\/\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-img\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/team-at-whiteboard.jpg);\"><\/span><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-text\">Cameron Hernandez, Miranda Brandt, and Theo Rode <\/span><\/a><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-copy\">Device: Democracy Plinko. Goal: Address the lack of equal representation and efforts to influence outcomes by transforming frustration into insight. Goal: Address low voter motivation due to lack of transparency by providing people with a way to vote that is straightforward and has a direct impact that the viewer can visualize.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card\"><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/democratic-labyrinth\/\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-img\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/Jack-w-game.jpg);\"><\/span><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-text\">Jack Van der Reis<\/span><\/a><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-copy\">Device: Collaboration Under Construction. Goal: Address the deepening partisan divide by engineering connection through the Labyrinth Board game requiring two players to collaborate to achieve a shared goal.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card\"><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/big-bird-is-watching-you\/\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-img\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/felix-peng.jpg);\"><\/span><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-text\">Felix Peng<\/span><\/a><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-copy\">Device: Big Bird is Watching You. Goal: Address the inequality of how people are routinely scored, ranked, and categorized by automated systems they cannot see, understand, or contest. Use play and humor to prompt self interrogation. Success means participants leave less willing to accept algorithmic scores at face value.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card\"><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/stacking-game\/\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-img\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/Roman-ds.jpg);\"><\/span><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-text\">Roman De Santos<\/span><\/a><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-copy\">Device: Stacking Game. Goal: Address misrepresentation by gamifying voting to make engagement more fun. The stacking game is inspired by the idea of meaningful play to build community and awareness.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card\"><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/neighborhood-potluck\/\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-img\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/amanda1.jpg);\"><\/span><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-text\">Amanda Kitrell<\/span><\/a><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-copy\">Device: Neighborhood Potluck. Goal: Address low voter participation by gamifying the voting process. I take a familiar game, Cornhole, and add twists, allowing for multiple players to participate on one board as well as allowing for players to \u201csabbotage\u201d the progress of the team.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card\"><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/tbd\/\" class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-img\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/game-of-democracy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2026\/04\/Joshua-turtles.jpg);\"><\/span><span class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-heading-text\">Joshua Heinstein<\/span><\/a><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-mudd-showcase-card-copy\">Device: Drop in the Bucket.
