{"id":2411,"date":"2024-04-03T10:48:31","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T17:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/diversity\/?page_id=2411"},"modified":"2026-05-04T13:48:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T20:48:26","slug":"summer-institute","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/diversity\/summer-institute\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Summer Institute?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Summer Institute (SI) is a one-week program that prepares students for the transformative first year of college and provides students with additional time to get acclimated to campus through the following experiences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Academic Preparation: <\/strong>Engage in mock courses and working groups that will provide a preview of college-level coursework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Skill-Building Workshops: <\/strong>Participate in workshops focused on study skills, time management, effective communication, personal boundaries and leadership; all essential for success at Harvey Mudd.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Community Building:<\/strong> Connect with incoming and current students, SI peer mentors, and key HMC staff\/faculty who can provide guidance and support throughout the college journey. Interact with faculty during mock office hours and lunch with professors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social Activities: <\/strong>Enjoy a variety of social and small group events that encourage camaraderie, identity development, relationship-building and belonging on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wellness Practices:<\/strong> Begin incorporating HMC\u2019s Ten Dimensions of Wellbeing to develop habits of self-care as a college student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Year-long Support: <\/strong>SI scholars will have a SI peer mentor that will be part of their support network during their entire first year of college. Additional workshops and check-in events&nbsp; will also be available throughout the year to stay connected to resources and support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Program Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students will learn how to navigate college resources, connect with faculty members and become familiar with key spaces on campus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students will prepare for their first year at Harvey Mudd College by practicing the use of various strategies to stay organized, study effectively and incorporate self-care into their daily routines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students will gain a better understanding of the academic pace and rigor of the CORE courses by participating in mock courses, office hours and working groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students will participate in workshops designed to practice leadership and soft skills that are needed to effectively work in teams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students will begin building community with their peers and other members of Harvey Mudd through social and small group settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students will have continued support throughout their first year through their mentorship groups, tailored workshops and community-building activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Summer Institute is free for participants and includes:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Housing (Early arrival to their assigned dorm room for the 2026-2027 academic year)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meals (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Program t-shirt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will move-in to their dorms on <strong>Wednesday, August 19 <\/strong>and the program will commence with a Welcome Dinner that evening. Official programming will take place between Thursday, August 20 and will conclude on Wednesday, August 26 with a celebratory dinner. Participants will then be required to participate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/student-life\/orientation\/schedule\/\">Harvey Mudd New Student Orientation<\/a> activities which begin Thursday, August 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Schedule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>*Sessions are being confirmed and this schedule is subject to change.&nbsp;Students will receive a detailed scheduled prior to the program start date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expectations and Benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are expected to move into their dorms on <strong>Wednesday, August <strong>1<\/strong>9.<\/strong> Participation in all of the Summer Institute activities from Wednesday, Aug. 20-Wednesday, Aug. 26 will be required. Students should also plan on attending one of the virtual \u201cPreparing for SI\u201d meetings offered (dates TBA),&nbsp; and will also be asked to provide feedback about their experience at the end of the summer program. Additionally, students will have monthly check-in meetings with their SI peer mentors throughout the school year, and occasional workshops and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous participants say that SI gave them greater confidence in their transition to Harvey Mudd and provided them with a strong, supportive community. Over the years a large number of our SI participants have gone on to assume leadership roles at HMC including, proctors, mentors, student organization leaders, Orientation directors and ASHMC presidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Participation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First-Year admitted students are invited to apply. The goal of the Summer Institute Program is to support students in STEM during their transition to college. If you attended an under-resourced high school, are First-Gen, from group(s) traditionally under-represented in math, engineering and science, and\/or have not had many opportunities to engage in college prep experiences; you may benefit from the additional time adjusting to the campus and culture at HMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Invitations are sent out via email, and students should sign up as soon as possible by filling out the Summer Institute Registration form found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.hmc.edu\/portal\/fy_status\">HMC Applicant Hub<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you did not receive the email invitation and would like to discuss participation in Summer Institute, please email <a href=\"mailto:&#111;&#105;d&#64;&#103;&#46;&#104;m&#99;&#46;e&#100;u\">&#111;i&#100;&#64;&#103;.&#104;&#109;&#99;&#46;&#101;&#100;u<\/a> to connect with a staff member.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deadline to register is Friday, May 15, 2026.<\/strong> Students will receive a confirmation by Wednesday, June 3, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mudd-highlighted-content\">We will try to accommodate all students that would like to attend, however, space is limited and admission into the program is not guaranteed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I have more questions.
