{"id":1648,"date":"2023-08-25T16:38:28","date_gmt":"2023-08-25T23:38:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cs\/?p=1648"},"modified":"2023-08-28T10:13:04","modified_gmt":"2023-08-28T17:13:04","slug":"fall-2023-welcome-to-a-new-school-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cs\/2023\/08\/25\/fall-2023-welcome-to-a-new-school-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall 2023: Welcome to a new school year!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Welcome to our new students, and welcome back to our returning CS&#8217;ers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire CS Department is excited to start this new year with you, and we look forward to meeting all our new students!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;d like to start this year with some announcements for our CS Majors and aspiring CS&#8217;ers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New CS Faculty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You may have already taken their courses, but previously they were visiting profs. We&#8217;re happy to announce that Prof. Arthi Padmanabhan and Prof. Calden Wloka are now Assistant Profs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New to the HMC Community, Assistant Prof. Lynn Kirabo is a joint faculty member of the CS Department and the Hixon Center for Climate and the Environment. This Fall, she will be teaching an Intro course on Human-Computer Interaction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We also have two new visiting profs, Prof. Carter Slocum and Prof. Gabe Hope, who teach Computer Graphics and Neural Networks, respectively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And finally, joining us to help with clinic, we have Naim Matasci as an adjunct Prof. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CS Student Resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cs\/student-resources\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"18\">Student Resources Page here<\/a>, which you can find on the main CS website and clicking on the &#8220;Computer Science Menu.&#8221; For example, the CS Opps List is an opt-in email list that you might want to know about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please explore the student resources and contact Chelsey Calingo, c&#99;a&#108;&#105;n&#103;&#111;&#64;&#103;.&#104;m&#99;.&#101;&#100;u w&#105;th any general questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Resource Highlights<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CS Opps List<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Found under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cs\/student-resources\/cs-external-opportunities\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1263\">CS Career and External Opportunities Page<\/a>, is a link to the Google Group &#8220;CS Opportunities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We often send out CS-related opportunities that are solicited to us. They may range from volunteer opportunities, internships, workshops, job opportunities with the CS Department, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CS Grutoring Program<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To new students: You will hear much about grutoring from Prof. Dodds and Prof. Medero! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cs\/student-resources\/cs-grutoring\/\">Please read more about it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To our returning students: Please remember to view the Grutoring page for the application. We want to encourage students to view the page so that they have a place to refer to once the email gets buried in your inbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CS Welcome Back Event<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Save the date! There will be a CS Welcome Back Event on August 31, 2023, in the McGregor Breezeway at 4:30 PM. Stay tuned for more information in another email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CS Organization Opportunity: Ethics in AI and Diversity in CS General Meeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The CS Department would like to provide &#8220;start-up funds&#8221; for creating a student-led club in these topics.
