When muons pass through water, they give off Cherenkov radiation, which is mostly in the ultraviolet (UV) range. Cherenkov radiation is very dim, so Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) are used to detect it. Unfortunately, PMTs do not detect UV radiation well.
