Mack Gilkeson sought to channel HMC student initiative, drive and intelligence into projects of real-world nature. They felt the best way to do this was to give students a &#8220;clinical&#8221; experience similar to that which medical students receive as part of their training\u2014thus the name &#8220;Clinic.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I gained the idea that engineering was like dancing, you don&#8217;t learn it in a darkened lecture hall watching slides; you learn it by getting out on the dance floor and having your toes stepped on.&#8221;<br><cite>&#8211; Jack Alford, Emeritus Professor of Engineering and Clinic Program co-founder<\/cite><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-103\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/clinic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/10\/gordon-prize-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"Gordon Prize 2012 Winners\" class=\"wp-image-103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/clinic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/10\/gordon-prize-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/clinic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/10\/gordon-prize.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professors J. Richard Phillips, M. Mack Gilkeson and Clive L. Dym received the Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education for their work with Clinic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2012, M. Mack Gilkeson and two other HMC faculty members received the nation&#8217;s most prestigious engineering education award, the National Academy of Engineering&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/clinic\/gordon-prize\/\">Bernard M. Gordon Prize<\/a> for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Engineering Clinic was established in 1963 with initial funding from the Ford, U.S. Steel and Sloan foundations. The Mathematics Clinic began in 1973 with funding from a National Science Foundation grant. The Computer Science Clinic began in 1993, the Physics Clinic in 1996 and the Global Clinic component of the program began in 2005 with an endowment from the Vickery family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climate Clinic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023\u20132024, Harvey Mudd College is launching the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/clinic\/category\/climate\/\">Climate Clinic<\/a> in order to better equip our students as scientists to pursue research and technology toward solutions to the threats posed to society as a result of changes in the earth\u2019s climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global Clinic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/clinic\/category\/global\/\">Global Clinic<\/a>, established in 2005, prepares students for the future challenges of practicing engineering, science and mathematics in a global context.
