W<\/a>e reached out last week about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/2024\/10\/18\/october-is-national-cybersecurity-awareness-month-and-we-want-you-to-act\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">removing the Claremont-ETC network connection from all your devices that don\u2019t need to use it.<\/a> This week, we hope you can take some time to run software updates and brush up on best practices to avoid being phished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staying cyber secure is a shared responsibility, and one of the simplest yet most powerful steps you can take is to <strong>keep your software up to date.<\/strong> Software updates, operating system, and app updates, frequently include crucial security patches that address vulnerabilities hackers could exploit. By installing these updates promptly, you significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your devices and data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond security enhancements, software updates often bring performance improvements, increased stability, and new features. These tactics aim to bypass security measures and gain control of accounts. While we always verify identity, your awareness and caution remain essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Remember these key practices to avoid falling victim to phishing:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Be wary of unsolicited requests:<\/strong> Exercise caution with unexpected calls or emails asking for personal information, and login credentials, or to install software. Phishing usually starts here.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verify before you act:<\/strong> Always confirm the sender&#8217;s identity before clicking links, opening attachments, or divulging sensitive information. This is a key step before opening any links.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guard your credentials:<\/strong> Never share your passwords or other confidential data with anyone, even if they claim to be from a trusted source. If you follow a link from a suspicious email and are immediately asked for your credentials proceed with caution. Do not enter your credentials until you have verified the sender.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Report suspicious activity:<\/strong> If you encounter a suspicious call or email, contact the Help Desk immediately by phone at <strong>(909) 607 7777<\/strong> or email<strong> <a href=\"mailto:r&#101;p&#111;rtp&#104;is&#104;ing&#64;&#104;&#109;&#99;.ed&#117;\">&#114;ep&#111;&#114;t&#112;h&#105;s&#104;i&#110;&#103;&#64;hm&#99;&#46;&#101;du<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By staying informed and following these guidelines, you can significantly reduce your risk of being compromised.
