{"id":5836,"date":"2022-10-04T15:39:47","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T22:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/?p=5836"},"modified":"2022-10-04T15:39:47","modified_gmt":"2022-10-04T22:39:47","slug":"september-2022-update-from-cis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/2022\/10\/04\/september-2022-update-from-cis\/","title":{"rendered":"September 2022 update from CIS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As usual, September flew by.\u00a0 I hope you have all settled into the Fall semester and are finding joy in your work and play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cybersecurity Awareness Month<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">October 2004 saw the birth of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and it has been renewed by successive US presidents.\u00a0 It is led by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/cybersecurity-awareness-month\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (CISA).\u00a0 This year\u2019s theme is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See Yourself in Cyber<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and CIS will be doing something each week to build on that theme.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the calls is to \u201cThink Before You Click.\u201d\u00a0 It is a fine piece of advice, but we know that everyone is busy, rushed and sometimes makes mistakes.\u00a0 So what happens in our environment if you do click on a bad link and maybe give up your credentials?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do NOT power off your computer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Immediately disconnect your computer from the network by turning off wi-fi or removing the ethernet cable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As soon as possible, call the Help Desk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The user support staff will discuss the situation with you and determine next steps, which could be as simple as changing your password and running an anti-virus scan or as complicated as taking a forensic image of your computer, depending on what happened. The time it takes can vary from one hour to several days, again depending on the situation. We will ensure that you have access to a computer in the meantime.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the face of malware, many security experts advise a computing environment that is completely managed by an IT group responsible for approving software applications and monitoring every machine.\u00a0 We do not think that appropriate for our educational network, so we need to have \u201ccompensating controls.\u201d\u00a0 In our case, fast investigation and quick response are one of the compensating controls.\u00a0 Clearly, steps 1 and 2 (above) of this compensating control are up to you: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See Yourself in Cyber!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>CIS FAST goals<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every year, each HMC vice president proposes annual goals for their area during a Cabinet retreat in the summer.\u00a0 This year, CIS decided to give some of our goals the FAST treatment (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/with-goals-fast-beats-smart\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With Goals, FAST Beats SMART<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).\u00a0 FAST stands for \u201cFrequently discussed, Ambitious, Specific and Transparent\u201d, which the authors believe is core to effective goals.\u00a0 As part of the \u201cfrequently discussed\u201d aspect, we intend to include something each month in our updates.\u00a0 This month, we will just introduce the fast goals, which you can read about in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1PnlZcGBVvylssx3CHKLXO0lDoDvcpaAGQoAVRiYROmQ\/edit#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CIS FAST goals document<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (HMC credentials required).\u00a0 The goals are in the areas of Learning Management Systems, WiFi, the HMC IT Community, and Digital Transformation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Discussions of Canvas<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking of learning management systems, in September, we took a second step in the campus discussion of campus (the first was a Bite of Learning last Spring). \u00a0 We brought to FEC a recommendation that HMC begin trialing Canvas with a view to moving away from Sakai along with the rest of the Claremont Colleges.\u00a0 Sakai is dwindling rapidly across the country, with only about 50 institutions left using it.\u00a0 This means that vendors of tools such as Gradescope and Piazza are less aware of it and technical development of Sakai has slowed down.\u00a0 In response to this situation, several of the other Claremont institutions have already made the move (CGU, Scripps, KGI, Pomona is doing a trial).\u00a0 In order to ensure that our students have a harmonized experience in the learning management system, we think that HMC should follow suit.\u00a0 The FEC agreed that we should explore Canvas, so expect more discussion and, if you\u2019re interested in testing Canvas, please get in touch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Computer Upgrade Program (CUP)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We launched this year\u2019s edition of CUP on September 16!\u00a0 Forty two people in fourteen departments have computers that are eligible for upgrade, and all have received emails with instructions about how to get a new computer.\u00a0 As a reminder, the CUP \u201cinsures\u201d your newest computer, no matter what source of funds was used for the original purchase, to make sure that it is eligible for replacement and our College stock of computers doesn\u2019t get too old.\u00a0 You can always check the records we have for you by visiting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/g.hmc.edu\/cis-cup\/your-systems\/inventory-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CUP website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (menu: your systems -&gt;\u00a0 inventory report).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Special thanks to Jonathan Ebueng for his work on revamping the website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s it for the September update from CIS.
