{"id":4875,"date":"2019-11-27T16:10:40","date_gmt":"2019-11-28T00:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/?p=4875"},"modified":"2019-11-27T16:10:40","modified_gmt":"2019-11-28T00:10:40","slug":"cis-computer-upgrade-program-redesign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/2019\/11\/27\/cis-computer-upgrade-program-redesign\/","title":{"rendered":"CIS Computer Upgrade Program Redesign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the past year, we have been redesigning the CIS computer upgrade program (CUP).\u00a0 We started with a <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/g.hmc.edu\/cis-cup\/the-program\">new program document<\/a>, which Cabinet reviewed and approved in November 2018.\u00a0 Then we started working on procedures and workflow, all with the aim of getting to a more streamlined program.\u00a0 We are not there yet, but we have made progress.<\/p>\n<p>The program tries to balance multiple considerations, many of which are in direct competition with one another:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have a budget for this program of about $75,000 annually<\/li>\n<li>We have an additional $29,000 this year, to help with the increasing backlog of older systems on campus<\/li>\n<li>We want to provide an adequate baseline of computers &#8212; but the program is not the sole source of funding for computers<\/li>\n<li>There number of computers eligible for upgrade is growing, with staff and faculty headcount increases<\/li>\n<li>Apple equipment is more expensive than Dell equipment<\/li>\n<li>Security &#8212; older computers can be more vulnerable<\/li>\n<li>We need to maintain fairness (not first come, first served)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The core ideas of the new program include an increased number of standard systems, a website where you can help us maintain our inventory, check whether you have a system that is eligible for upgrade and, when you are eligible, select a new system.\u00a0 This is still a work in progress, but we have sent out emails to many of the faculty that have computer that are four years old or older.<\/p>\n<p>We hope that this new program will strike you as an appropriate balancing of the considerations I mentioned above.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the past year, we have been redesigning the CIS computer upgrade program (CUP).\u00a0 We started with a new program [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":35,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,16,7,10,11],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4875","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-from-cis","category-governance","category-strategy","category-cioupdates","category-user-support-services"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4875","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/35"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4875"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4875\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4875"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4875"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4875"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
