{"id":4371,"date":"2017-11-22T17:18:38","date_gmt":"2017-11-23T01:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www5.hmc.edu\/ITNews\/?p=3348"},"modified":"2019-07-06T16:03:49","modified_gmt":"2019-07-06T23:03:49","slug":"update-from-the-cio-november-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/2017\/11\/22\/update-from-the-cio-november-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Update from the CIO November 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2017\/11\/pumpkin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3349 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2017\/11\/pumpkin-300x291.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of a pumpkin which evokes thoughts of Fall\" width=\"300\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a>It has been quite some time since I managed to get out an update from the CIO. \u00a0Now I have a backlog of things to write about. \u00a0So here goes&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As usual, the team at CIS worked hard over the summer to prepare for the new academic year and to complete projects. \u00a0Every summer we share our top goals with Cabinet and that helps to map out our work for the year. \u00a0This year\u2019s full list is in our article on \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/2017\/10\/22\/cis-goals-2017-2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CIS goals for 2017-2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but in this update I\u2019d like to highlight:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Secure computing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Transition of services to TCC IT<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accessibility<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Secure Computing<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is a cliche, but worth repeating, that secure computing is a constantly evolving journey rather than a fixed state. \u00a0The topic seems to grow more important by the year, and once again, security was the number one IT issue in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.educause.edu\/research-and-publications\/research\/top-10-it-issues-and-strategic-technologies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Educause annual top ten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In CIS we are constantly discussing how to achieve a balance between security and convenience. This year, we have a number of initiatives going that will enhance overall security, without being too much of an imposition on your daily workflow. \u00a0For example, we have some user training available through LawRoom and, to guide the roll out of this training, we are using the results of a data mapping project we did a couple of years ago. \u00a0That way, we hope to ensure that those who handle sensitive data have access to the training first. \u00a0Other security efforts include deploying two factor authentication and ensuring that hard drives are encrypted. You can read in more detail about this in our article <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/services\/encryption\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Transition of services to TCC IT<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In January I wrote about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/2017\/01\/23\/the-changing-landscape-of-it-at-the-claremont-colleges\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the changing landscape of IT at the Claremont Colleges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and talked about a number of initiatives aimed at appropriate centralization. \u00a0We have since moved both CINE networking and HMC networking over to CUC under the auspices of TCC IT, which is led by Chuck Thompson, CIO at CUC. \u00a0\u00a0The Computing Committee met with Chuck in October and learned about the governance structure and operations at TCC IT. \u00a0The transition was successfully completed in August. \u00a0HMC users should still contact the CIS Help Desk as always, and CIS staff will work directly with TCC IT. \u00a0This is basically the arrangement we always had internally in CIS. \u00a0\u00a0If you\u2019d like to read more about the transition and some of the achievements of TCC IT, please see our article on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/2017\/11\/15\/networking-services-transfer-to-tcc-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Networking Services transfer to TCC IT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Accessibility<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The College\u2019s accessibility taskforce worked continuously over the summer and into the Fall on many parts of the accessibility initiative. \u00a0A team of students at CIS converted many PDFs from the main college website into native WordPress format (WordPress is the software on which the HMC website is built). \u00a0CIS is working closely with the Marketing and Communications to implement the provisions in the College\u2019s accessibility policy and to ensure that web content editors have all the training and resources they need. \u00a0If you are interested in creating accessible content, CIS provides consulting services to support you. \u00a0Details about that are on our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/services\/web-and-document-accessibility-consulting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">service catalog page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are\u00a0 some other articles to you may be interested in: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are some new faces in User Services at CIS: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/about-cis\/cis-staff\/#usg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meet our User Services Team<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And we have just welcomed a new Instructional Designer, Dr. Yi Luo, in our Educational Technology Services unit. \u00a0Watch for an article introducing her.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are interested in getting free access to Autodesk products, you\u2019ll want to read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/cis\/2017\/09\/27\/autodesk-and-hmc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Autodesk and HMC<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At this time of year, I\u2019m thankful for the great team at CIS and we at CIS are thankful for the great HMC community. \u00a0With that, it only remains for me to wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving!
