In this model of teaching, students review lecture materials outside of class time, usually short videos, and spend classroom time on more interactive tasks. In this workshop we’ll review the basic concepts of the flipped classroom model, some best practices, and some of the tools that faculty have used to create flipped classroom materials.

Thursday, January 15
3–4 p.m.
Shanahan 2450

Course Web Sites: Sakai, Google Sites and pages.hmc.edu

CIS provides several different ways to create course web sites. For those who want a completely out of the box solution Sakai may be the best choice. Most faculty are already familiar with Sakai, so we’ll show a few tricks and tips for making Sakai work better for you as a course web site. Google Sites is a solution for those who want to customize their course web sites, but don’t want to have to write HTML code. For the more technically inclined, CIS also has a brand new way to create web sites on a site called pages.hmc.edu. Pages.hmc.edu is the replacement for www2.hmc.edu, www3.hmc.edu and www4.hmc.edu, which are all slated for retirement. Like www4.hmc.edu, pages.hmc.edu uses a directory in your home directory on the Windows file server to host web pages.

Friday, January 16
10–11 a.m.
Shanahan 2450

Diving Deep Workshops

Sakai Lessons Tool

The Sakai Lessons tool is relatively new to our instance of Sakai, and uses a very different paradigm from most other Sakai tools. Lessons allows you to create pages that link to other Sakai tools such as quizzes, assignments, resource items, or forum topics. Usage scenarios include creating an interactive syllabus or lesson plan. You can create multiple pages that appear in the list of tools on the left or use one page to link to multiple subpages. Inserting images or other multimedia files allow you to create more visually interesting pages.

Monday, January 12
11 a.m.–noon
Shanahan 2450

AV in the Shanahan Learning Center

Need a refresher on using the AV systems in the classrooms in the Shanahan Center?
